I am back from Cali as well.

Had a great time. We arrived (unfortunately) on Friday and did not get to Monterey till a few minutes before the F-Chat dinner.
Glad to have met some of you, sorry to have missed so many others and some that I wanted to talk to more but just did not get around to (Art, you being one of them).

The dinner was great. Jordan, hell of a job there buddy. I can proudly say I was the one who purchased the first tickets that day :)

So many faces, so many people, so many nice cars.

James G, an absolute pleasure meeting you in person. Hope we will have some time one on one someday. I would love to hear some stories. For all of you who missed that: Jim bought 0002, the very first Ferrari ever delivered to a customer. This to me is the most historic value you can find. Jim bought it for a song. I can't believe you bought the car for THAT! Damn, I would have bought it, although I would have had to sleep on the couch for a few weeks after that :) I am glad it is staying in the Ferrari Enthusiast family and not with some disconnected collector that just bought is BECAUSE.
Jim spend most of Saturday by his P4 explaining to what must have been a Gazillion people asking the same questions over and over. This to me is a true collector and enthusiast. Jim I take my head of to you.

Rob and Jennie, pleasure meeting you two as well. It was about time. 3 years and now finally faces.

Nika and Mike! Two great people. Having had the pleasure of meeting both before in Miami on various occassions. Both of them have an aura of fun around them. Life to its fullest. Damn if I would be invited (wink wink wink) I'd go to Italy as well to congratulate :) Did my congrats already.
BTW Mike needs to put some other exhaust on that Enzo. He could not shake me off in my RV going up to Laguna Seca. I was right on his tale (in that traffic jam:))

Mario (Lawwdog)....and his lovely wife. Instant connection. We spend most of the time together. Had a blast. The two auctions at the same time, the day at Laguna and the Concourse in Pebble. Had a blast.

I heard John from New Orleans was there, but did not see him to introduce myself same with some of the other guys I wanted to meet.

After the Pebble Beach Concourse we headed south to Sequoia National Park and spend 2 days in Sequia and another 2 in Yosemite before heading back to Miami yesterday. A great trip. I have some pictures as well that I will post tomorrow. Mario those of you and the F1 will be e-mailed to you later.

BTW at Laguna the F1 2003 did a full burn out in front of us at the pit wall. My ears are still ringing. Marion got an autograph later.

Back to Ferraris this time. One more set after this one.

The first pic is the Enzo from New Jersey driving slowly down the line. I understand that shortly after this photo was taken, its clutch burned out.....

    Martin,

It was great to meet yourself at the dinner and hear about your little Arizona adventure.

BTW Ferrari was running a F2002 instead of the F2003-GA i dont know if anyone else noticed it. I myself had to do a double take and look close to some of my photos. Notice the cooling duct, flip ups and the lack of sculpting on the side pods.

Great videos! I love to hear a 355 Challenge run, they sound so much better than the 360 Challenges, which are too "quiet" in my opinion. Rob, I see you're a Senna fan too, even better!

    Rob-

I met you on Wednesday late afternoon at your paddock area. I remember you saying you had a dB violation... and that you wanted to take some good flyer laps at the end of the second day.

Did you ever get those flyer laps in?

FYI in my 355 I managed a high 1.39.xx and consistent 1.40.xx-1.43.xx depending on traffic when I insisted to the "officials" on Thursday afternoon that I belonged in the red group. The blue groups were just a clusterf#ck of a parking lot.

What was up with the "open passing" when I got yelled at by an official for passing a CS in a corner in the red group?

    Cheers!

The best I ever did was the two laps in the video I posted where I was following that fast yellow 355 C.

Wow, I need you to watch the video of my two laps and give me some advice. The fastest I got was 1:46. Do you have any video? Stock or Challenge 355?

I only had official problems for the sound, not passing. I didn't see anyone else get in trouble either with the Red group. I'm pretty comfortable with close passing and driving from my club racing, but not everyone out there was. The yellow 355 Challenge was very fast and made some great passes splitting me and another car in the turn, but that doesn't bother me if the driver is good. 3 wide is fine if everyone holds their line and doesn't push out or pull in on exit.

You should see our thread in "Racing" on Laguna Seca lap times.

    Rob-

I had the titanium grey 355F1 B with one OMP ARS seat and full interior. I used my slicks- champagne colored Challenge wheels, Dunlop slicks, Challenge front springs, Brembo Indy calipers with 355mm floating rotors. And a Tubi.

Laguna is a braking track- if you are good with brakes you will shave seconds off your time.

Watch your video as see if you can see any deviation from this-

Front straight- should be flat, all the way to the far right side of T2 turn entry point which is at the cone area/runoff area. Over the hill you should be straddling the closer of the two solid white lines.

T2 (hairpin)- double apex- turn in at the cone area, to the first striped patch on the inside. Let it run 1-1.5 car widths out, turn in again to the second striped patch. Track out to the far right, bring it to track left for T3. Should be in 2nd, shift to 3rd.

T3- slight throttle lift at the second brake marker to settle chassis, turn in on the last brake marker at full throttle, classic constant radius turn. Shift to 4th on track out.

T4- dab the brakes at the second to last brake marker, downshift to 3rd, turn in full throttle at the last brake marker. Full throttle all the way to T5, should be in 5th by T5 brake point.

T5- hard brake at second to last brake marker, double downshift to 3rd, turn in at last brake marker, full throttle through the turn, track out to edge. Shift up to 4th halfway up the hill...

T6- dab the brake to set the car, downshift to 3rd, turn in slightly later than the other corners so far, full throttle all the way to the corkscrew. Should be in 4th part of the way up.

Corkscrew- Since we're not in a racing situation, prudence is justified. I dab the brakes to control the speed over the top of the hill, do all my braking control after the summit, downshift to third, again a later apex point than most of the other corners. Through the corkscrew the 355 was getting completely unweighted right before the righthand turn in (revs spike, no contact in the front end, front and rear tires squeal when they regain contact and steering wheel kicks hard straight while being turned right). Should be full throttle all the way to T9, maintenance throttle near turn in point. If this were a race, no braking all the way up the hill until PAST the summit, then threshold braking all the way to turn in point with engine braking to 3rd from a possible 5th double downshift.

T9- Enter late from wide right, should be in 4th, again, at turn in should be at full throttle. Track all the way out right.

T10- hard brake at the second brake marker, downshift to 3rd, full throttle through the corner. Should be popping into 4th almost before track out point, should be in 5th before pit entrance...

T11- HARD brake at second brake marker, triple downshift to 2nd, late apex (cutting the striped left area closer to the main straight side than the other side), track out to the far right.

Wow, that's quite a bit different than what I was doing, thus probably the time difference. If you get a chance, please watch my video.

I was going flat up over the hill, but probably not braking as late as I could have.

T2 I was single apexing late on the back side coming out of there only in 3rd.

    T3 I think I was doing OK.

T4 I could brake a little later and I was staying in 4th.

T5 to T6 I think was fine when I didn't have to worry about the sound meter.

Going into the corkscrew I know I can brake later, I was off the throttle well before going over the top.

T9 and T10 were corners I was improving slowly and I think just needed more time to figure out.

T11 I thought I was doing well at. "Slow is fast". My old autocross skills came in handy here. Even in the red group, I didn't see many hitting the apex here.

For what it's worth I did the Skip Barber 3 day race school at Laguna Seca 4 years ago and I have about 15 days there in total... Nowhere near as many miles there as I have at GingerMan (literally in the mid 4 digit miles) but I think quite a lot for a Midwesterner.

Great videos Rob! I especially liked watching the F50 spin, and listening to the GT-1. Having never been to LS, I watched you go over the top of the corkscrew and instantly remembered BobD's advice, 'aim for the oak tree'. Funny, I spotted the tree and he was right!

I finally had some time this evening to see it.

Your brake point was close. You can brake slightly later if you drive the line I described. More importantly you need to carry full throttle all the way up to the brake point- don't coast. That point carries through to all the throttle/brake transitions- that would be the biggest improvement to your lap times.

That is a slow line and a slow exit rpm. You can be more aggressive and shorten the distance by accepting a hairpin is a slow corner, and finish the turning ASAP instead of making it a long loopy turn. The longer you are turning the car, the longer the car is waiting to accelerate faster (car accelerates faster in a straight line and not when cornering).

Both those turns are very constant radius, not very challenging. If you're driving a FF1600 or a FC you don't need to downshift to third through T4, but with a tintop and a relatively poorer P:W ratio 3rd will get you out of the corner quicker, and in the 355 it seems the more power you are getting to the wheels the more grip you get, so, for all corners I usually am full throttle.

The corkscrew turn in is the only tricky turn in that T7, T8a, T8b corner. After the turn in left towards the oak tree, once the track drops there is a ton of grip to turn right for T8b- so much grip I wish my 355 had 30-50% more power...

T9 you were too close to the middle/left side and were turning in too soon. T10 is more of a classic constant radius off camber corner. T9 has a ton of grip and works well with the 355 suspension- car seems to be super grippy and planted through there.

T11 is a slow corner. You make heaps of time there in the brake zone. If you can be on the brakes late and carry speed through the apex to the track out point you will shift earlier into 3rd.

    Hope that helps!
