Lately there has been an increase in users trying to scam buyers in the classifieds. This is not isolated to FerrariChat, other forums and classified sites are experiencing this in increased numbers.

The basics are the scammer private messages users that indicate in the classified thread they are interested. They then hijack the sale by pretending to be the Seller or another Seller at a better price.

We'll keep this thread updated as we discover more information. Please report any unusual activity.

Usernames of suspected accounts and their email:

    Robertkrafts [email protected]

Here are some things you can look for...
    1. Suspect any users contacting you offline that aren't the original seller.
    2. Suspect any new users with a low post count.
    3. Suspect any nonsubscriber, Classified Sellers have to be subscribed and very few scammers will subscribe.
    4. If they provide an email, do a Google search, many of these emails are known and listed as scammers.
We''ll provide more updates when we have them. Thank you.

I've turned in a few actual Nigerian (by IP) scammers to the mods over the past few months.

    Stay vigilant!

I have a question. I have sold quite a lot of items here over the last few years with many satisfied buyers. No complaint and everyone very happy when their items were received. And some of the sales have been many thousands of dollars. Why cant you award a star rating to sellers like EBAY so all Fchat members can see the ratings and feel comfortable with the sale? Is this possible?

that would be a manually intensive process, all buyers can easily look at your old ads in Classified with Advanced Search.

Not as intensive as the "how often do you change your cambelt.." threads, and "I have the lowest mileage Ferrari, I am a proud garage queen owner..." threads :D :D

I've found most scammers to reply to WANTED ads and they then use photos from the internet claiming to have what you're looking for.

Always good to do a reverse image search using Google to make sure the photos don't turn up on some other site as a precaution.

Another scammer user Frank Zin replied to one of my wanted ads and said contact Loeb from Kingston NY ([email protected])

It was a scam using internet pics of old sales items.

References are becoming increasingly necessary now like on the watch forums.

Here is the restriction used by another car forum to help deter fraud -

Creation of threads in our Classified forums is restricted to our active forum members only. This means members must contribute to the discussion forum for a minimum of 30 days AND 30 posts before they can post any items for sale, for trade or want-to-buy. They can respond to existing threads to ask questions and purchase items from qualified members. This rule is due to a significant increase of zero-history members posting high dollar items for sale without vouches.

Members who have been active readers but are infrequent posters will also meet the classified access criteria to create posts after 6 months membership AND 5 productive posts.

Note that the posts must be "productive posts", no simple yes/no/OK, etc. Thieves are lazy, that's why they are thieves. If you make it work for them, they will go where there are easy pickings, like here.

Individual members who are not commercial vendors do not have to pay to post in classifieds. There is also no subscription fee (not even for an avatar ;)) There is a Vendor Marketplace and I assume they probably pay a fee.

This is why I can’t stand people coming on here for no other reason but to pedal their crap.

#1 There have not added any value to the community by participating in discussion.
#2 I feel like they are just using the site as a cheap EBay.
#3 There’s a high probability they are scammers trying to prey on the fine people who do participate in this site as it was intended.

google image search all images for sale, you can often find them on other forums or from previous sales or posts or folks images in FB or what not otherwise historically stock photos often with photoshop additions like newspaper with a date or what not.

Watch this one on Facebook - from talking to others, and my experience, goes straight to PM and states that the tool kit is sold, but has lots of other items. Sent me lots of pictures, nice kit but all too cheap (pair of Challenge carbon race seats for $600 with overseas shipping at $120)
