THe oil pressure on my 550 seems quite high compared to my V8 Ferrari. In normal working temp, the oil pressure reads 50psi at idle and goes as high as 90-100psi with the engine running at 3K-5K rpm. I checked with the Ferrari dealer and they said the V12 engine usually has higher oil pressure than V8. Just curious what other 550/575 owners' experience is. Is my oil pressure normal or requried attention? Please comment.

My 550's oil pressure is also a lot higher than my 360 Spider. My gauge readings are in metric. 360 will show 1.5 bar warm idle, 5 to 6 bar at speed, whereas the 550 will show 3 to 4 bar at warm idle, 7 bar at speed.

In fact, I am worried about the opposite (ie. 550 is normal but V8s are too low). Figured high oil pressure is always better than low oil pressure any day. In any case dealer said the cars are within spec and fine.

You might check the archives on both this site and the old F-chat site. Ali Haas has several threads on 550's and high oil pressure. It was his opinion that anything much over 90-95 psi is excessive, and not good for longevity. He mentioned that you can manipulate the pressure some, by using lower weight motor oil. The standard weight is a 5w-40 Shell Helix, but you could switch to a 5w-30 or even 0w-20 in order to lower the pressure.

Check the archives for details, as this is not my area of expertise...
