348 on Ebay. As some of you know...I am partial to black...and aint goin back...unless I buy a red one of course

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4605564217&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

I have emailed the seller a couple of times. He responded quickly. Last 30k was in 1999 (ouch) by previous owner at Ferrari of Bev Hills. Paint and interior are in good condition. He is an FCA board member. California car. He is pretty set on a price of 50k. He uses an independent FCA supporting mechanic. I am thinking ~44k assuming no other issues.

What causes the A/C to turn on when the car is started regardless of whether you want it to or not? Never turns off on its own and will turn off/on after a few seconds of starting car. This is an unknown to me and that non replaceable A/C thingy scares me a tad.

Opinions? I am not interested at all at 50k.

I love the black. Recently upgraded black 308 for black 348. You won't regret it.

Definitely will need service. I think mid 50's minus major service.

    Mike,

I bought my 1991 348tb Red/tan almost a year ago. 30k service was 3 months old, 16,800 miles and a new tubi installed along with new tires. I paid 50k. You can and should do better price wise on this car. The a/c issue eventually poped up on my car. It is fairly common. There are several threads on this website that address the reasons and gives you fixes for it. Bigger a/c fuse, cleaning the a/c computer unit with contact cleaner/stabilant 22 etc. It was easy to fix and I have had no further problems. I wouldn't let that scare you. What about the clutch? Looks like a nice car.

$50,000 is way too high for that car. Ive seen it on ebay a few times and admired it. I love black (I ended up with Red this time around myself). $50k for a 91 Targa that needs an engine out service immediately (time) and has an A/C Compressor clicking on for no reason (could be a switch or a relay?!?).

    Id pass at $50,000.

Thanks for the post. I told the owner I was thinking 44k with what I know already. No idea on clutch. 30k miles...should I be worried about a clutch? I would make sure my PPI checked that real close. If I get a Ca car I will drive it all the way back to Houston. Southwest is cheap from HOU to LAX one way!

Your purchase example is perfectly inline with what I am thinking. I want a no issues 348 92ish, fresh service, 50k. It is out there - I can wait for it.

i seriously doubt you will get a decent 348 for under 50 k from ebay , there are too many poeple looking at any of the ebay cars by the time you see it , its not a "barn find" more like retail $or not quality . you have to go look in cars.com or like. -those are places that post ads that people place in local newspapers, they dont know any better ....

Yes, I agree. The owner of this car is an FCA board member though. I have a feeling he is in the same mode of thinking I was when I had my 308 listed at 30k. It sold for 22k this week (I paid 24...2 years). If he comes down as much as I did percentage wise from his original price he is looking at 43k.

I think $43k - $45k if fair, if the PPI reveals only the major service needs to be done. That's going to cost $5k.

By having the clutch checked out during PPI you should be fine. At 27k miles it may have been replaced already. However, alot depends on how the current owner and the previous owner were with the clutch. At least nothing should be a suprise by doing the PPI. PS. What you are looking for is out there. You just need to be patient.

On the clutch, I think the MOST important issue is frankly, whether the car has a twin disc or single disc clutch. Hell with whether it's new... that's absolutely unimportant.

If it's a twin disc setup, you're looking at about $3K in parts whenever you need a fresh one (twin discs, T.O. bearing, triple seals, etc).

If it's a single disc, you're looking at about $1200 in parts whenever you need a new now (discs, bearing, seals)

Conversion from twin disc to single disc requires a new flywheel -- another $3K. So, that approach only makes sense if you think you'll own the car long enough to go through 2 full clutches.

Those of us (myself included) driving twin disc cars are:

    1. very careful with out clutches
    2. trust fund babies
    3. holding out breath most of the time.

It looks like the baby brother of my car. Including the single wheel rash. I can see the grill in one of the pictures. Looks like a nice car. I think it is a great deal at $44k. Good luck.

Owner has once again stood his ground at 50k - very firm. I will definately pass at that price. I gave him my number if he wants to talk again. I know someone who just bought a 328 in LA and would likely use that garage for the PPI, transaction and then "repairs". I would not drive that car from LA to Houston as is.

    Thanks for all input.

I find it amazing that an 'FCA Board member' would let his car go 6+ years without a service. It sounds to me like his ego is bigger than his wallet. I think you're right to walk away.

Thanks, too old for my wants. 91s or newer with VIN 89300+ are my target group as that is when several upgrades happened.

    Thanks though.

To Jim's comment - he said he paid 58000 for it 6+ years ago and that is his cost basis. This, of course, ignores the severe price drops 348s have seen for the last 7 years. My concern is "what else" is wrong. Going to pass on it as I said.

Which ones in particular are you looking for? Most of the older cars were under warranty at that time, and probably were subject to the upgrades and/or TSB's as they were still being serviced at FNA dealers. Juts curious which upgrades are on your hot list.

i didnt realize an FCA board member owned made it an especially sound and prime example of a car. ive seen some ragged out ,some nicely re-painted ,restored and some hardly driven cars at the fca events , doesnt mean they are entering the concours with it. they are just like any other fcar owner. all different. dont let that sway you in your decision either way . he knows that there will be someone eventually that will buy it for that price. its not ridiculous price, just more "retail"'than "trade in" value. itll be sold as soon as the sun comes out and the temps hit open- top weather.

The FCA member part does not mean that terribly much as you obviously guessed. Just stating it just in case it flagged someone about the owner.

To Russel - suspension mostly. 89300s and above are more stable at speed. Also fuel injector upgrade if I recall correctly. I trust my local FCA President (now regional president) and he said 89300. TS, TB, GTS, GTB, Spider...no yellow ones. Looking for a no issues car.
