As I refocus my watch collection I've decided the next purchase will be for 2 totaling approx. $100k. There's obviously a litany of options out there, and I'm interested in seeing what your picks would be to see if I'm missing a good direction that's different from the ones I'm contemplating. So, which of these would you go with, or if you've got an alternative, post details!

    Pairing option one:
    A. Lange & Sohne Platinum Datograph - approx. $45k
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Patek Philippe Platinum Annual Calendar Chronograph 5960P - approx. $50k
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

    Pairing option two:
    A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Striking Time White Gold - approx. $85k
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Safari - approx. 20k
    Image Unavailable, Please Login
Disclaimer: I've got an AP ROO, a Lange Grand1, Several Rolex Daytonas and sport watches, as well as a couple of Panerais. I'm looking to have a mix of collectible/appreciating watches that will be rotated/worn.

At these price points there are no wrong answers of course, just personal preference. Having said that, I would go for the first pairing myself. Patek + A Lange is a great combo. Maybe approach it from a complications perspective if you haven’t already? Figure out what types of complications you like best and then find two great examples.

(FWIW, I haven’t owned watches quite this nice, but have owned AP ROO, Panerais, U.N., etc)

I would do Zeitwerks and the 5960. You can get the Lange slightly loved for in the 60k Range. Those would be my two choices goven what you already have.

The Dato is the winner of that bunch. Great value at the moment.
I owned the grey dial 5960p at one time. Nice but top heavy.
The black dial 5960 is the one to own...if you can find one.
If you have a small frame and wrists, search around and go for a PP 3970g (36mm).
Classic and market is down right now.

I haven't seen any striking Zeitwerks in the 60's... can you point me in the right direction?

    I do love Datograph.

The PP 3970g is great, but I'm average build with larger wrist/forearm so I think the 36mm would be a bit small.

Then go Data for a strap watch and a Patek 5980 blue or 5990 for a steal.
That would be a great pair and keep yo under your $100k.

The Patek sure is pretty. I wasn't looking at any of these watches but the AP the last time the market took a nose dive and I remember a Rolex always seemed to be more expensive compared to a Panerai, Breitling, and even an AP in comparison. Personally I'd go for a less contemporary Patek if I were you. If only the swiss made cars.

The "striking time" is different from the standard Zeitwerks found for $50-60k:

Got it. Not as familiar with Lange as I am with Patek. I would stretch the budget and get a zeitwerks and 5960.

Well to further complicate things (no pun intended), I've thought about stretching the budget but it would be to do a 5270 with the Datograph. The issue is I'm enamored with the Zeitwerk!

I’m in full support of th 5270r as long as it’s 3rd generation rose gold. Reality is any of the 5270r are epic.

If you are going to stretch the budget i means you should really stretch the budget- 5270r and zeitwerks!

Well, I ended up buying an AP Safari yesterday as a replacement to my Rubberclad Offshore (listing in the for sale section if anyone's interested). Lange Datograph is next and I've got calls on a few on the market - although I'm going to get the Platinum 405.035 (up/down) version instead of the early version pictured above. I plan on watching the Patek 5270 market a bit before committing to that versus the Zeitwerk striking - looks like prices are sliding a bit compared to the 5970 so I'd like to understand why and see if that trend continues before committing to one or the other.

I believe we a getting in from a private collection a JLC skeleton with a 6 figure retail that we will be able to sell right.

Reach out to Andrew at the Diamond Exchange on here. Fchat references available.

Full disclosure: Andrew works with me. I too have a number of happy Fchat customers, and have also done some 6 figure deals with Fchatters; you're welcome to look up the threads on me.

Excellent choice IMO, as I was reading the thread I was going to suggest this option. AP make excellent sports watches with a truly iconic design and the platinum datograph is a beautiful watch with great wrist presence and almost certainly the ultimate chronograph on the market today (if you discount the double and triple split).

A rose gold RM11 is around £165k here in the UK so I imagine that will be at least $200k which would blow the stated budget by 100%. Still a great suggestion though.
