So it seems as my car is a mid-late 1989 car the full metal ignition key WAS part of the set of keys supplied by Ferrari with my car.

That's my opinion as well, as we all know that the folding keys are prone to break...besides, you must have one of the latest, if not THE latest 328 of the whole forum...

Just my guess, could it be the case that 2 sets were the plastic head folding key from the factory and the third set was dealer supplied with whatever spare key that works with 328 they had at that moment?

All are correct with respect to a copy or a backup of the key. I received my set from the original owner and I believe that Dino944, on this form, has a special order (red leather dash) 1989 328 that has been in his family since new has the same set of keys as I presented in post #8. Attached is a photograph of the backup or spares that I had made and use to "preserve" the original set(s) as they have become quite valuable.

Interesting. It does make sense to me that Ferrari would have originally supplied the same keys, not one folding and one not.

It's just that every 89 328 that I've ever examined, at least 25+ of them, ALL have had the 348/355 style non-folding key. I guess when keys were lost or someone wanted a backup, they went to the Ferrari dealer, and that's what the dealer supplied.

But I've _never_ seen that 348/355 style key with a pre-89 328, and I've examined even more of those. Weird.

The two original factory key sets. They also came with a full metal ignition key similar to Paul's photo above. Key ring on the lower set is the original with the car, the one on the top I bought online.

I believe that the Pouch Key can be bought from a couple of Lock Suppliers currently. One is in Canada and the second is here in the USA. Refer a separate post. I think that the general consensus was to settle for one of these rather than "making" a new Key. That is unless someone is very particular about replicating the Key exactly.

I've got three folding keys for my '89 (SN 80174) along with two quarter window lock keys, one pouch key, and one plastic identifier tag, but no non-folding ignition key. It seems unlikely that the three previous owners would have kept track of all these but have lost the non-folding key, but that's possible I guess. Or maybe there was a short period where dealers supplied a third, extra, folding key instead.

I was looking over my original 328 brochure yesterday and the interior shot of the car shows the familiar Ferrari issued keyring with the metal (non folding) key sitting in the ignition.

I couldn't take a photo unfortunately but if anyone refers to their large, red covered 328 brochure you will see it there.

    Interesting…

You can just make it out in photo 12 out of the 13.

that is very interesting Mark, a buddy of mine replaced his old folding key, he only had one left and was coming apart.

He has an early 328, 1986 model.

    happy holidays

Really throws open the debate about the original folding key versus metal key supplied by the factory.

Any more thoughts on the original supplied folding versus standard key debate?
