As title Paul Newman's exotic dialled Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref 6239 hammers at $15.5 million.
I knew it would top the Bao Dai Stella, (star dial) but not triple it's price. Amazing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rolex Submariner ref 6200 Big Crown with Explorer 3,6,9 dial hammers at $470k. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pretty crazy number but I guess it is 1 of 1. However, at that insane amount of money it's no longer a watch, it's art I guess?
To think, you could have bought these watches for nothing not that long ago.... A 6062 was soooo cheap not all that long ago. Coulda woulda shoulda Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

In Canada the 1964 price of a SS 6239 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet was $285.
The auction of the Joanne Woodward/Paul Newman Paul Newman Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref 6239 with Exotic Dial here:
So Paul Newman's Paul Newman was probably $300 when he got it. Perhaps a Rothko or British Guiana 1 cent magenta bought by Stuart Weitzman have realized such stellar returns on investment. I don't count vintage Ferraris because they have changed hands many times and these items have not. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I wonder what happened to the bracelet, which would have probably been a riveted Oyster ref 7205 or, as it's a later Cosmograph ref 6239 with a 200 unit bezel, a folded link Oyster ref 7835, or if bought without???
Seller was the ex boyfriend, James Cox, who is still a friend I believe, of Paul's daughter Nell. Some, but not all, of the proceeds are going to a conservational charity set up by Nell. If Rolex wasn't the buyer, they probably have a 250 GTO and other Ferraris plus a McLaren or 2 in the collection.
Doubt we'll ever know who the buyer is. Btw, the watch is really cool, but that strap just doesn't look right compared to having the bracelet IMHO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I watched this live stream yesterday - personally for that $$ I would rather have Steve McQueen's 275 GTB/4.
If you google Rolex 6239 a myriad of photos will show up, but I think, the band is ref. 7205 in stainless.

Judging by the good condition of the bottom of the lugs, it looks like the watch was not worn with a bracelet, as they leave marks. If it was bought with the bracelet PN may have had it taken it off straight away and always wore it with a leather strap, put the bracelet in with the box and papers, which could then have been lost as they so often were, especially then. Interesting numbers on one of the lugs. Watchmakers normally scratch details of service inside the case back. Could have been serviced on June 17th, 1988??? The numbers are said to be Tiffany & Co inventory numbers where Joanne Woodward is believed to have bought the watch for $250.
