Yea, originally from Asia and then Scandinavia, and brought here sometime in the 18th century from Europe.

Corrrrrrect! The Norway rat is not from Norway, but from Asia/China! Via Europe. This ugly rat has taken over the habitat of the "cuter" smaller black rat, which is rare to find nowadays.

It takes a couple of weeks more or less depending on weather for the decomposition to complete & the carcas to dry out enough so the smell abates. Shorter in open air, I hauled a sticky trap out of my car shelter this spring with half a dozen mice on it. No particular smell. Possibly they were caught & freeze dried. ;^)

Smell can persist indefinitely in an enclosed space. eg: Once had a mouse die inside a window a/c's plastic blower. Warm weather hit, brought the A/C into the house, installed in window & plugged it in. Blew mouse nest all thru the house, along with lots of stink. Ended up disassembling the thing outdoors, washing everything down with a bleach+soap mixture, rinseing. Letting dry, trying & repeating. Smell was gone after the 3rd washing.
