    Been tracking the Porsche stuff for a while. A good article on the Porsche Li Iron battery here. The latest A123 Lithium stuff is really starting to shape up now. Impressive how much the Ah has ramped up since just last year. 40Ah's for sub $250 is amazing.

    I've been using my Braille lithium for over 6 months now without any issues. I have the Braille charger designed for the lithium battery; but apart from initial charging I haven't had to use it.
    Car gets semi regular use; but would go 4 weeks or more between drives sometimes.

    A123 Batteries is a US company, building batteries in the US, with Li battery technology R&D'd at MIT. You clearly know nothing about A123 but perhaps you have heard of MIT? A123 has been one of the top two suppliers of Li batteries in the US for several years. They recently accepted Chinese investment because of over-extension of capital investment at the behest of the current administration in the White House.

    You have made ONE correct statement: "This isn't a 100% track focused race car with a team." Which answers your own question: "Why not buy a Challenge Car...?"

    Just wondering ....for cost savings, at the price of more packaging effort, have you considered paralleling (say) 6 or so of these for ~$1,000 and ~ 27AH and 11 lb? (Brailles are typ. 2 lb lighter)

    The Ti brake posts have been machined, tapped, and finished. They are ready for install. I have a new set of track wheels on the way, featuring 12" x 18" rears that take advantage of the added clearance provided by the brake posts.

    I worked with a few SAE Formula Hybrid Teams that did their own bundling/packaging of small, cheap Li-Ion batteries, and built their own Battery Management Systems. There's no way to recover those costs, even with a $1000 delta. And Oh Yeah, the last team's battery pack caught fire, burned up the car, and set their lab on fire.

    Based on recent announcements by multiple OEMs, there are new battery technologies (such as Lithium-Air) coming to market in the next 2-4 years, that will be half the weight of Lithium-Ion and half the price for the same energy storage. For a street car like a Ferrari, that means a 6-pound battery for $1000. So, I'll re-schedule that effort, and move some other projects up the priority ladder.

    A shot of the Scud on the scales for another corner balance. Getting ready to make some component changes. Having the ramps with the scales and lift arms integrated makes getting on and off the lift a WHOLE LOT easier!!

    I received a rapid prototype for the hat on the front CFRC rotor this week. Here it is, mounted to the rotor with the bobbins. Since it is designed in Titanium rather than Aluminum, there is a lot of pocketing, slotting, and re-dimensioning to save weight while maintaining strength equal to the OEM part. Probably not enough weight savings to offset the increased solidity of the rotor, but he squeezed every ounce out of it that he could.

    Are you saying you won't replace the heavy OEM battery for 2-4 years? I'm interested in a lighter battery option but would prefer to wait until you have determined which option is best through your rigorous evaluation process. :)

    I'm not going to go through a year-long R&D process to develop a battery bracket to hold a Li-Ion battery that will be obsolete in 2 years. If someone else does the work, I may buy one that's available off-the-shelf.

    Gotcha. FWIW, this mod seems like one of the more worthwhile ones as it's not just shaving off a few grams, its dumping many pounds. If I come up with a mounting solution, I'll share it with the group.

    I believe the Porsche battery weighs about 12 pounds, so the weight savings is significant. I do not know about compatibility, CCA, etc.

    I run a Braille ML30 in my Scuderia without any issues. Weight is 4.2 kg from memory.
    They sell a custom mount for it which I am also using.

    Interesting. Did the custom mount require modification to mount to the car or does it just bolt in?

    I could have saved nearly 2kg by chucking the standard battery mount in the bin as it is engineered to cope with the standard 21kg battery Ferrari uses. That would have necessitated drilling holes and mounting the Braille custom mount directly to the cabin floor.
    I didn't want to do that so I ended up mounting it to the standard battery plate. I needed to make some small alterations to the standard battery plate to put the Braille as far back as possible to gain clearance for the battery cables. Note, the Braille Lithium battery is able to be mounted sideways as it is a dry battery. Another advantage over a wet cell battery.
