Not a bad idea, but what it does lack is, that there will be no resistance from the lapped driver. That's why I prefer reversed grid, which is really a fight for positions.

With all of this lapping and getting 8x the points, the records we all know would all be broken next year, my Minardi! I don't really like the 1-8 pos. getting points, but I'll live with it. So is Sato going to be thought of as a better driver because he has more points in the record books than Clark, Senna and Prost combined? The history books will be thrown out a window if this points system goes ahead. :(

The 1-8 points helps the midfield teams get some points, which is vital in their discussions with sponsors as it lets them differentiate from each other.

Cross time comparisons are always difficult at best and if you really want to compare Clark's record with Sato's you have to normalize on one point system (doesn't matter which one, just pick one). That's why I find it so totally ridiculous when e.g. the Speed commentators make a big deal about Michael's 1000th point won etc. It is rather meaningless as an absolute measure.

Yes the new points system is clear to me but I want the record books to be as accurate as possible. I know, I know there is no way just numbers can tell the tale but if things keep going the way they are.... Records won't mean anything. Just the progression of the sport I guess.

I wouldn't say that. There are still measures of all things that go beyond rules changes (to some degree): Number of victories, podiums, titles, poles, fastest laps.

So while WC #7 is a bit of a given, I'm counting down until Michael matches and surpasses Ayrton's pole numbers. I'm expecting a bit of an emotional response from him in that press interview (remember when he matched Senna's number of victories in Monza?).

I still like the added weight system the best. I thought it worked great in DTM, BTCC and STCC.

Not sure how this would lead to sandbagging. The winners have to add weight, the losers can take weight off. I think it really helps even the field out very nicely over time.

    F1 is fine.
It's just everyone else who isn't Ferrari that's the problem. Look at this season, and the last. The FIA made EXPLICIT rule changes to hamper the dominance of Ferrari, and MS, but what's it done... ? Nothing. MS has won the last 3 races, and will keep winning -- it's not Ferrari's fault that there's no one else on par. And, it's not so much even the car, and the team; Ferrari also has the best driver(s) in the sport; 2 lock ups, dropping some wheels on track out, and MS still beat Rubens by 3/10ths. Yeah, okay. What's next, a "talent tax?" Maybe they'll make a monkey drive the f2004 ... that's a great idea!
If Bernie, and the FIA, want to keep the sport going, how about giving the "other" teams more dough out of Bernie's pocket? Oh, there's a revolutionary idea... gee, how novel. Give the struggling teams money to stay competative. Wow. Who woulda thunk it?
Fact is, all these "rule changes" are knee jerk reactions to appease all the whino's in the wings... and to keep Bernie's pocket's lined. If anyone looked at F1's problems, they'd see it's an economic issue, not a reuglatory one.
And, everyone keeps talking about reverting the rules back to the old days... if you think about the lightyears of development that've taken place, the cars would be ridiculous today, and the best teams would still be that much faster.

Maybe they can borrow one of Minardi's monkey drivers?

I think Hubert has the right idea. Not that I could see Bernie forking over cash to make other teams competative, but they're Ferrari proofing the sport. They blame Ferrari when it seems like everyone else just doesn't have the right stuff. Why hamper a team that's doing their homework and bringing the sport to a more competative level?
