When you start your car when the engine is cold, what rpm does your car idle at? My car idles at 1,000 rpm, but I have been told that it should idle at 2,500 at first. Thanks.

Mine is garaged at about 55-60 degrees.
I just checked....it idles cold at about 1000.
warm it idles about 1200 rpm.
The dealer returned it this way.
so my data may be useless

Are you sure there are no modifications (like coolant thermoswitch opened and/or AAV air path closed/blocked)?

If your '85 is a US version, the AAV is item #30 below:

Thanks a lot Steve. Is there a recommended way to clean the AAV?

It's not really worth the time hassle/risk of refailing IMO to try to clean/restore a bad AAV -- they're not that expensive from importec.

First, try to determine if yours is working quasi-correctly (if you take the hoses off you can just visually check the positioning of the closing vane between the hose ports) -- should be fully-closed after heat soaking on a warm engine, open just a bit at room temperature, and well open after cooling in your freezer.

A stock 308 QV USA Spec should idle up to 2300-2800 in cold idle due to the AAV. It even says it in the owners manual. Unless like stated you have an obstruction or it just isn't working then that is your correct cold starting rpm. Clean them with carb cleaner as they get grime in. Easy to clean and most of the time cleaning works unless you just want to replace it.

I just returned from the garage and located the Aux air valve on my car. It is located directly under the black coolant overflow tank. I was able to disconnect the two large black braided hoses that go to the AAV, but how do I disconnect the AAV? Due to its location, I could not see how it is mounted, but it appears to be mounted to the underside of the black coolant overflow tank. I would rather avoid removing this tank if possible.

    Thanks.
    Ken

P.S. My car is a USA version

Should the idle in a USA spec 1987 328 behave the same?

Remove the 2 10mm (I think) nuts underneath the recovery tank. It comes out easy.

No the 328 should have a high idle around 1800 or so.

I should be able to give a accurate reading to what the cold idle should be on a 328 shortly. My car is in the shop to have it replaced. I was originally having all my fuel injectors replaced (I have the old steel ones) as they had some funky patterns and a couple were apparently leaking, giving me some hot start issues. Any way, my AAV has been acting up also, as my car would start at 1,000 rpm cold sometimes, then creep up to 1700 rpm, then drop back to 1,000 when warm. Other times it would cold start right at 1700 rpm. Strange, but my Ferrari tech says it should just be replaced. As soon as I get the car back I will report here....hopefully later this week.
