Really dumb 348 oil change question

    Guys...how do you know when it's time to change your oil? My oil is just as clear as a bell still; I've likely only put 1,000 miles on it. It's synthetic. If it's clean, doesn't that mean it's still good? Does synthetic break down over months? If so, how many?

    I'm not a cheapskate, I'm just wondering if your oil isn't even moderately discolored does it need changing?

    If Ali Haas is still on this board, he's Dr. Oil and I will defer to his wisdom on this.

    I've been advised that once a year is a good interval for a low mileage car, because the oil traps contaminants (filter notwithstanding). It's not so much a matter of losing viscosity as cleanliness.

    I would still change at least once every 12 months regardless of miles. :):)

    Ali Hass is the oil guru. Send him a PM and ask him what he thinks mate. He is always happy to help out. :):)

    I would not worry about letting it go for 2-3 years. There is lots of oil in the 348, and I doubt it would be harmful for low miles usage for a few years. The Ferrari paranoia will definitely suggest at least every 12 months or each time you fill up the gas tank, whichever comes first.

    Quite honestly, it's been 2 years. I check it religiously, waiting for the oil to discolor, but it never does. That said, I have driven it maybe 12-1300 miles since the oil was changed, and it is synthetic.

    I though I read in the 360 forum about using 0 weight oil and the 360 owner had a slight problem after using it (Pretty sure he blew his motor).

    If that is who told him to use 0 weight, I would hardly call him an Dr. Oil.

    Really?? Thats very odd if he did blow up his engine?? Do you have the link somewhere?? I would love to read what he posted. :):)

    Ferrari engines have really close tolerances and I dont see how 0 weight oil, especially a Synthetic 0 weight would do that. :confused::confused:

    In other words, Ferrari engines LOVE 'thin' engine oil. :):)

    There may have been more to this 360 oil change I reckon......

    Modern synthetics are so good, and so far beyond any oils known in the past 100 years, that the old every 3000k miles thing is a joke. Oil changes are little more than a revenue stream for the oil companies anymore. Your synthetic oil will be perfect for many many more miles. The most important thing to concider is moisture build up in the oil it's self. Moisture and contaminates are the enemy of engine oil today, not so much age, and mileage. Heat cycles are also important. If you drive the car regularly on the track at high oil temperatures, then the life will also be deminished. Gasoline is the fluid that causes more havoc with your systems, if it is not changed regularly, rather than oil, as it contaminates and detiorates at a much faster and higher level. Also no question is a really dumb one, when dealing with $100,000 automobiles!!!
