I had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman in the late 70s at, as I recall, a Watkins FCA event. He was admiring my GTC and we spent some time chatting. So, is he still with us? I believe he was quite a racing driver and had a passion for Ferraris. Bob Z.
Yes, I’ve seen no reports of Sam’s demise. He’s been dealing with Parkinson’s for several years. I admire him very much. You can read my review of his book “Where the Writer Meets the Road” at www.speedreaders.info
Funny you post this - I was speaking with some "car guy" friends the other night and Sam's name came up - we were speaking of racers who were/are also great test drivers and journalists - Randy Probst is always one of the guys I bring up but Sam P as well. He is around 78 years old now I believe and still alive but suffers from Parkinson's as @Jack-the-lad stated - not sure how severely that is affecting him but I always had the utmost respects not only for his driving/racing accomplishments but ability to drive a car and articulate it to non-professionals and just general car enthusiasts. Cheers
Here's Sam Posey in March 2007 in Amelia Island. Great guy! The lady on the left is Suzy Moss. Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login

I had the pleasure to meet him and his son at a Road and track feature on Jim Glickenhaus's P4/5 cars, in 2013 I think it was. Back then he was already with Parkinsons, which affected him while walking but not while driving. A very nice guy, and still drove the heck out of those cars. Hope he's doing well.

I met Posey, Hobbs and Varsha at St Elmo's Steakhouse in Indy. Sat at a table next to them. Friendly and gracious with us F1 fans in town for the 2000 GP.
Long form articles like that are almost extinct. Too bad CandD neglected to credit the writer. They had a strong masthead back in those days.
The Ford tunnel port heads for the 289/302 were not a success. Ford had done the same tunnel ports on a variation of the 427 FE for racing. A year later Ford would come out with the Boss 302 which was a Cleveland head with canted valve angles. The valves and ports were too big for the street but destroyed the competition on the track.
Lots of interesting responses, as I expected. I can’t remember whether it was in Road and Track or Car and Driver but I read, as I recall, an article where he drove/tested a Daytona. One of the statements was something like “I’m putty in the hands of any Ferrari owner” He should have an interesting autobiography. As my memory becomes more lucid, I also recall speaking with him for a short time at Lime Rock. He actually asked me if I needed help doing tech inspection. The was the same weekend I met and spent around an hour chatting with Paul Newman. What a weekend! Two legends. Bob Z.

Mudge Pond is Sam’s first memoir….written before he was 40. Cheeky! He very graciously signed my copy…owned since publication….at Amelia Island a few years ago. My review of Where the Writer Meets the Road is at www.speedreaders.info
Sam's Scrapbook , "Attacked by Revson" ...... Trans-Am, Riverside, 1970 ....... pg 70 anybody have it/read it? short synopsis ok, found this. classic PLACE IN THE SUN FOR REVVY https://vault.si.com/vault/1972/01/10/place-in-the-sun-for-revvy "When I had that little dust-up with Sam Posey at Riverside in 1970, during the Trans-Am, it was because he bumped me at the start and again in Turn Two where we both spun out. I was really burning, and I walked on up the pit wall to where Sam was standing. He was saying, 'Now, Peter,'—you know that lockjaw way he talks—'Now, Peter, I didn't mean anything .... 'But I had him by the front of his lapels and he was backing up and he fell right over the pit wall with me on top of him. I never swung on him, so help me...." Revson's side. Sam's side? .... 'Now, Peter, I didn't mean anything ....' .... and they later became friends, right? Image Unavailable, Please Login .
Shelby team member Chuck Cantwell told me that the tunnel port engines were pretty peaky--a narrow power band at high revs. BTW I recall that Sam had a Mercedes Gullwing as a young man. I first became aware of him when driving the Autodynamics CanAm car(solid axles f&r) in 1967(I think).

Had a real privilege of working Sam thirty years ago and is truly a gentleman. We reunited him with his 1969 Boss 302 Trans Am car at Lime Rock for a magazine article. That's me in the background wrenching away. Image Unavailable, Please Login
