Would agree but for the rare time a second being better than the first, "Aliens." I still want to reach for something bullet laden and shoot at anything when that scene where the chick's eyes pop open just before her little friend jumps out.

Alfred Hitchcock did a great job in that movie. Not so much scary as creepy. I still get a little nervous today when I see a bunch of birds in one place.

I saw The Sentinel when it came out in mid-70's, rented it a yr. a so ago. Ridiculously dated and horrible acting but still very creepy.

Original Omen is an alltime favorite, very creepy, verging on frightening.

    Rosemary's Baby I always hated...it's just irritating.

The Birds scared the HELL out of me when I was a kid. Of course the wind was blowing while trying to get to sleep that night, making a rose bush scratch the window. I think I spent half the night staring at the fireplace waiting for birds to come out.

    Funny, I own two now.

In it's day I think Alien held the title for quite a while. Gotta hand it to Riddley Scott.

I think The Texas Chainsaw Massacare remake had to be the scariest for me. In one of the DVD commentary, I don't remember what the director mentioned, but that he kept the look of Leatherface away from the actors so that they can have a real surprsing yet scary reaction when they shot the movie.

Your right. I had a few nightmares after that one too. That also reminds me of "Wait Until Dark" and the refrigerator scene.

    I HATE horror movies.
The only 2 I've seen listed so far are Exorcist (which scared the sh*t out of me even though I closed my eyes for half of it) and The Birds (more of a creepy than scary movie as mentioned before.)
Tonight I saw the Grudge to get in the Halloween mood and I almost crapped my pants.
Actually I think The Exorcist and some of the old Alfred Hitchcock movies like The Birds, Vertigo, Psycho, etc. were the only horror movies I'd seen until today.

Elegantly-made, SFX-rich horror movies aren't frightening, because their professional slickness shows through.

The original Night of the Living Dead was effective - and scarier than its big-budget remake - because it looked like something someone could have shot with a home movie camera. Blair Witch could have been similarly effective, but had no actual witch/monster, and also just made many viewers nauseous because of all the camera-jerking-around.

My vote would be for Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, available on DVD. A 60s-era low budget effort, but something that makes you very glad you are not there in the movie with the actors!

Realistic-creepy settings: The Phantasm series and Frightmare spend a lot of camera time in dark, silent mausoleums. These places are eerie enough in the daytime with flowers, lights, friendly muzak!

Please add to that The Ring (Japanese version).

    Still my favourite:

    The Exorcist.

The Hellraiser series seem very demented. I also found Texas Chainsaw massacre was slightly messed up. Um, Showgirls was scary but, had some OK eye candy.

And these were the movies that actually made me cringe (and I rarely do that).

If you haven't seen it yet:

    http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0189998/

... in which Willem Dafoe does a spectacular job of portraying Max Schreck. :)

Also worthy of mention: the Werner Herzog remake of Nosferatu, also available on DVD, in which Klaus Kinski plays the vampyre.

    http://imdb.com/title/tt0079641/

Kinski looks pretty malevolent even without makeup, so with it he looks very worst nightmare. The scene guaranteed to ick out your wife/girlfriend: The heroine is lying on a bed, ready to give her neck to Kinski to keep him there until dawn. Before he gets to her neck, however, he gloatingly takes one long-taloned hand and slides the hem of her nightdress about an inch up her thigh. That's all. Probably the single most lecherous moment in the history of cinema. :D

obviously you didn't read my post on the first page. The only reason the movie scared the hell outta me was because i had a dumbass babysitter who thought it would be funny to show a 5 yr old a movie about a killer clown. long story short, i had nightmares for 3 yrs, was afraid of taking a shower (if u remember the shower scene) for a couple of months, was afraid to get any balls that went down the storm drain, and was scared to go into my little brothers room because he had a stuffed clown.

Agree...Original Nosferatu, the remake starring Kinski, and Shadow of the Vampire were the three greatest film takeoffs on the Dracula story. Max Schreck was the creepiest film Dracula ever, no doubt.

Yep, and if you read about Murnau's life (and death) things get even creepier. BTW, the ultimate scary clown was JWGacey.
