Do you have a set of calipers? If so, measure the outside diameter of the thread. 4.XX will be 5mm. Then to get the pitch, measure peek to peek of the thread.

Thanks, everyone. Best I can tell they are M5 x 0.8, 14mm long.

    I ordered these from McMasters:
Hex Drive Flanged Rounded Head Screws
Alloy Steel, M5 x 0.8 mm Thread, 16 mm Long
    92137A420

Hopefully they're the right ones. If not, I'll have 25 spare screws! I'll update this thread when they arrive.

Mcmaster has an automated order system. We email PO's and they are confirmed in less than a minute. It's quite amazing.

Rutlands carries that stuff. Replaced a bunch on the 599.

Update. I can confirm these are the right ones. They are maybe 1-2mm longer than the OEM screws, but McMasters only sells this size in length 12mm or 16mm. The 12mm ones are probably too short, and the extra length doesn't seem to affect anything.

One of the OEM hex heads was completely knackered and required an Easy-out to remove it. There were also several whose hex heads were rounding, so I replaced those, too.

I also found that some cretin who worked on the car previously had replaced one with a Phillips head self-tapping sheet metal screw, damaging the threads in the process. I couldn't get a new screw to start, so I left it in. I may try some day to repair the threads with a thread chaser, but this is OK for now.

The hex key was likely rounded for 1 of 2 reasons:

    - Someone used a close, English sized wrench in the metric hex

    - They did not seat the hex key in fully - common problem with the shallow hex on button heads.

Probably right, Dave. And probably the same guy who used a self-tapping sheet metal screw in place of a machined M5 screw. Grr.

There is a product that helps with rounded out allen head fasteners, or even applied to hex heads to increase grip potential of the tool used. . I think it was called something like Dr. Grip in the Craftsman line. It’s basically just a carborumdum grit paste, which you could substitute for with a fine valve lapping compund, as well, if you wish. Something I thought worth sharing for future reference.
