What an awesome achievement. Just awesome. For me, following this adventure has given me a sense of what it must have been like to be a privateer in the golden 50s and 60s era of endurance racing. It's been fascinating to watch, read, listen and enjoy this story unfold, and I hope it carries on going. Bring on the next P4/5C outing - whatever and wherever that might be!

Thanks Jim a million times over. You are Legend.

Why does this need a petition?! Surely, you can safely assume that everyone wants this to happen in 2012... And a version for Le Mans too please (even if it means Diesel power)!

Petition signed Jim and if given approval it would be an honor just to fetch water and food for the team during those late hour's. Work schedules can alway be adjusted when something so important is at hand.

Keep us up to date ok?

    Best,
    Gregg

The First lap is always a bit of a mess especially as it was both raining and dry. We told him to go slow and let the field thin a bit before charging. A number of people lost it early on. This lap was an 11:07. He later did an 8:57 at night.

Note us coming up on this one.

I have to say it looks fantastic from all angles! :) Your FlickR gallery is truly amazing.

8:57 lap, at night time, and with the GP track as part of the Nürburgring course is very strong performance! Hard to believe this is a privately engineered car, those kind of numbers are usually made with teams of hundreds behind the cars...
This is why this car reminds me of Pagani Automobili (big compliment here!)... Mr. Horatio Pagani is also "alone" and he is making cars faster and more desirable than Ferrari with the staff of maybe thousands...

    From Car & Driver:

Harsh words, but not correct. Fact is that P4/5 is a prototype, and the 24 Hours are for GT and Touring Cars. So allowing to participate in the "Experimental Class" was something like a legal back door. On the other side the organizers must ensure that this basically non-eligible car will not take one of the first places or even an overall win. Hard for Jim and the team, but in a certain way understandable.

One should not forget that the Ferrari F458 Italia qualified for pole position, and a Dodge Viper won in 2001 and 2002 - so much about "national protection"...

If I'm not mistaken, the BMW GT2 is also competing in the Experimental class and they won las year and took 2nd this year. the XP class is no cheap class.

Great write up in current Car & Driver Titled "Roar in the Forest". 2nd. in class. The article also states without tire and gearbox damage you might have finished in the top six. That and the restrictor your team was saddled with was the only thing that held your team back. Congratulations on a tremendous and world class achievement.

It has nothing to do with National Protection it has everything to do with Everyone (Including us) wanting lower weight and more HP and they have a difficult job balancing everyone. It was the organisers that told us that they were unhappy with the 290 KPH that the Porsche Clup cars could go on the straight. (Our VMAX with restriction was 270) and they did restrict the 458 after it turned an 8:31. I thought the organisers did a very good job and they did give us more air after our first race and less weight after our second. If they give us a chance to compete at the top level we may come back and I think they will.

As an aside it was the E1XP2 BMW that won last year. Finally P 4/5 C is GT2 not a prototype. The BMW M3GT with it's rear mounted transmission is much more of Prototype than P 4/5 C which is a GT2 . P 4/5 C's body is based on a fully road legal body, windshield,
height/width and length. It's not an LMP1 Prototype shaped body with narrowed cockpit, fenders and a sail.

Well, the Car & Driver article gave the impression that the German organizers did their best to see a German make as winner, which is not true.
Fact is that P4/5 Comp does not fit into any GT class thus must be considered as "prototype" (I didn't said LMP1). The BMW's are IMSA cars and built in compliance with the rules of this series. As IMSA allows much more than European GT2 they had to start as "Experimental".
The organizers of the 24 H Nürburgring traditionally try their best to "equalize" the top cars which come from different classes. GT2, GT3, SRO-GT4, LMGT2, IMSA-ALMS, ex-DTM, with and without turbo, and that not only the actual specs, but also those from earlier years. Plus numerous versions from different make cup series like Porsche, Ferrari, etc. Believe there had been at least 20 cars from different classes which had chances for the overall win. All this has to be "equalled" as far as possible by using formulas for weight, air inlet, tank size, tyre bredth etc. As an example, the very experienced Manthey team started the race with 2 different Porsches, one in class SP9 acc. to FIA GT3, the other in class SP7 acc. to 24H GT3. Even Olaf Manthey, who most probably was born already in a Porsche on a camping ground near the Nürburgring, was unable to decide the better option. So he entered both cars, with the same drivers, in order to see how things are going. After lap 13 the SP9 car - with marginal disadvantages - was retired, and all efforts concentrated on the SP7 car (the later winner).

I fully agree, P4/5 Comp was restricted in a way which made her chanceless, but this was done purposely, because they could not afford a "quasi prototype" to win against GT cars. Another reason may have been the lack of available performance data.

Anyway, it was nevertheless a fine performance on which the whole team should be proud of. The car saw the finish line, and all incidents had been 3rd party caused. Unfortunately I was not able to be there due to personal obligations, so I sincerely hope the story will continue...
