No one has really given an opinion on the Mobile. It's European formula which has high zinc phoro and you can buy it at the auto parts store. I imagine more people would use Redline or Amsoil if it was available in store but many don't wish to order it.
Well had my oil changed a week ago. After some discussion, the service advisor suggested Mobil 1 15-50. I was a little concerned about the weight, because going from 5-40 to 15-50 might mean less oil flow and protection when the oil is cold. But because the temperature in California almost never goes below 50, I was told that there was no difference between the 5 and 15. The advantage of the 15-50 was that at higher temps and faster RPM, this weight should offer greater protection. What do you think? I was thinking about going with Mobil 1 0-40. But some feels this oil is too thin and may not offer enough protection at high temps and high RPM
I believe Mobil 1's 15W50 is marketed more for track use. Was this from a dealership or independent shop? I am about to take my car to a known local inde shop for an oil change. They told me that they use Mobil 1 0w40, but they can order Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 if it makes me feel better.
MG- In late model cars, up until the 599, Ferrari recommended 5W-40 or 0W-40 except for track use or very high temperature climate use. Not so sure the brand matters as long as it is the correct spec and correct weight. I would not be comfortable with 15W-50 oil for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Taz Terry Phillips
ok so whats the best oil for the 430 ?? ive had 5-30 in there from the dealer i am going to tell them i do not want shell anymore because of the foaming issue .. ill bring them a case of oil to use for the change if i have to ... but what /. and what grade should i be using ????
Be careful changing weights as oil pressure can sky rocket... someone on here did that a couple months back & had oil pressure over a 120# .... 5w40 unless you live in hades & use 0w40 . why reinvent the wheel...
Thanks for the input. I am going to see if the oil pressure is within the specified zone of 70-90 psi when revs are 6000 and oil temp is 212F
Is the dealership Newport or Beverly Hills? If it's at a Ferrari dealership, I am pretty sure they know what they are doing. The 15w50 is marketed as Mobil's race/track oil and should give you that extra wear protection expecially if you do track your car.
You need thin oil to protect the car when it more need it, at cold start. It's better to protects agains wear. If you constantly race your car you need a heavier to fight the constant heat at all the surfaces. If you don't race your car just use what the manuals stand, 0W-40 or 5W-40.
can anyone explain to me? Since 0w40, 5w40, 10w40, 15w40 all have the same viscosity at operational temperature(100 C), why aren't we all using the thinest(0w40) so we can also have the best protection for cold engine? Is it because the 15w40 is longer lasting than 0w40?
did some reaserch and found from a guy at a local speed shop that says mobil 1 is only truly 51% synthetic and that amsoil and redline are 100% .... i spoke to my local ferrari dealer said bring whatever oil you want well put it in ...... im not sure yet ...
Do you mean AGIP? Valvoline 5W-40 fully synthetic for me, not the blend in the hokey oil test. Taz Terry Phillips
Is Mobil 1 15-50 too thick? Here are some notes about oil temp and oil pressure with the Mobil 1 15-50. COLD ENGINE Oil Temp unknown- at lowest position on gauge Oil pressure at 105 lb/in when at idle MID-WARM ENGINE Oil Temp about 130F Oil pressure at 80 lb/in when at idle 1.6 RPM Oil pressure at 105 lb/in when at 5-6K RPM WARM ENGINE Oil Temp about 212F Oil pressure at 40 lb/in when at idle Oil pressure at 70 lb/in when at 5-6 RPM
I'm putting Quaker in tomorrow, my shop has Royal Purple but with all these mixed reviews I'm sticking to what appears safe. Maybe next time ill man up and put redline in. Still like to hear some good long term reviews, maybe next year. This is a great thread.
