The 328 owners manual says "a socket connectied to the ignition system ... is available for connection of the diagnostic unit..." Is this diagnostic unit available? What does it help adjust?

It doesn't allow adjustment of anything. It just lets you see various ignition signals. Here is the 308 QB version. I imagine the 328 is similar. Should be a description in the manual.

    Interesting.

Any idea what the 12v pin is for? Presumably it is switched with the ignition key.

From what I've heard, the Ferrari Tester that plugged into that was nearly useless.

The 12 V pin shows that 12V is supplied to the coils. The crank sensor pins show the sensor signal. The coil trigger signal show that the ECU is firing the coils and from the shape of the pulse you tell a lot if you understand the relationship of the shape to different problems. For example\ this figure shows the difference between bank 1 and bank 2 on my car when I lost bank 1 due to a bad rotor.

It's more for verifying that things are working correctly or not -- if you search on "Jofatron" (the name of the unit), you'll get some prior threads.
