Could you put this cars engine and gearbox in some other Ferrari? Just a question, probably a dumb one (engine bay looks immense compared to all other Ferraris except Enzo...)...

^^ Going along those lines, most Formula 1 chassis are sold without motor/gearbox. The trouble with just bolting in any old motor is that in F1 cars (like in the F50 :D ) the motor is load bearing. This would be an awesome way for someone to build a half decent F1 car for 200k...

Maybe it's just "Me"...but I see a very repairable F50....Here's my thought process. With C.A.D. why couldn't all the dimensions for a F50 tub be placed into a program, and the new tub made from metal pieces that are welded together?!....Mark

Guys, I am really confused. I'm no expert on the construction of super-exotics so can someone please pull these two opposing concepts together for me?

    1) People say that because the carbon "tub" is damaged (thanks for the pic), the car is beyond repair as it is too expensive to mold a new tub and then disassemble / reassemble the car. People further add that it would be impossible to find one, MAYBE Ferrari has one lying around and "purists" would not except a tub made by anyone but Ferrari themselves.

    2) Others say that Ferrari says you MUST replace the tub every X years anyway. So if the tub MUST be replaced every so often either SOMEONE (Ferrari or otherwise) must be able to supply them and it must be somewhat reasonable to do (relative to the $3/4MM these things are worth). Else, is the F50 going extinct in a few years?? I figure I would have heard about that.

So anyway... someone tie this together for me... what am I missing? Replace the tub like you would have to do anyway and fix the other minor stuff? Or forced to part-out?

There are many ways to repair this car using more modern materials. But the cost either way would be massive. You would have to have really deep pockets to fix this one.

I believe that to be a myth. The fuel cell needs to be replaced every ~10 years but the tub should only need repair or replacement if it shows signs of delamination.

Given that McLaren built the first carbon-fiber monocoque in Formula One back in 1981 and it hasn't turned to dust in 30+ years leads me to suspect there's really nothing to that claim.

The first composite tub was built I believe by Ford for the MK-IV in 1967 and the one in mine is totally fine.

This car could be repaired but as other's have said as it would be a stories car it probably wouldn't make sense cost wise.

How hard could it be to find a NIB F50 tub?

In another thread here I read Pininfarina converted a few F50 to RHD, and that was supposed to require a new tub. They may have the old LHD tubs stored somewhere. Maybe you can buy the remains of the whole company for not much more than the worth of the tubs :)

What is it that is giving you this idea? gtwhaley said that it wasn't going to be listed until they'd gotten a replacement VIN plate. I can't imagine that will be a quick process.

Read that thread again. A new member this morning suggests the exact opposite.

The twists continue on this one. ;)

And after you win the bid, they'll load it onto your trailer with that CAT loader in the background, just slide the forks underneath, pick it up, and plop it down good to go.. LOL

    And she's back!

Can anyone confirm if the cost of the repair is greater than current market value for a road worthy F50?

I was going to put in a $1,000 bid when no one else had but decided it wasn't worth my time to register. Now it's already at $65,000 so I've clearly missed my chance. :-\

I hope it does find a home in the hands of someone who can get it back together and I agree that as far as cars with stories goes, this one has a whopper of a tale associated with it.
