Woof...Tequila has a bad affect on me. Seems that, when I was single, I woke up in strange beds next to strange women...most of whom were a 10 at 2 but a 2 at 10 :(

Not necessarily so. US regulations require that all liquor, including tequila, be bottled at a minimum of 40% ABV. Not so in most other countries. Take Corralejo... the Mexican version is bottled in at 38%, whereas the US version is 40%. So, the US version is actually stronger. Liquor below 40% ABV isn't uncommon in many other parts of the world, but isn't allowed for sale within the US. However, there is nothing illegal about bottling liquor a little above 40%... it just costs the distillery more to produce that way and so many do not.

Although I put more energy into whisky, I've had memorable experiences with a few tequilas. Neat, I've really enjoyed Gran Patron, El Paradiso, and Corralejo. Mixed, any decent 100% agave white tequila. The choices are endless.

Gran Patron starts at $200 a bottle, versus $50-60 for Patron Anejo. It's triple-distilled, which they advertise as a good thing, but the additional distillation (most tequilas are double-distilled) will inevitably strip away some of the original agave flavors so highly prized by some tequila afiocionados. But it comes in a very nice looking crystal decanter packed in a velvet bag and a fine-wood box. Very elegant presentation and very balanced flavors, but not what I'd consider a "tequila-lovers tequila." Basically, there are better tequilas for less money. But hey, I tried it free :)

BTW, if you're a huge Tequila fan and ever go to Mexico make sure to ride the Tequila Express train through Tequila where they serve all you can drink shots; probably won't get past 4 though.

I can't drink tequila, I black out. I'm not really particularly fond of the taste, either. :(

Now vodka is a different story..

Porfidio has made some excellent batches, though consistency has been a problem and you will get snubbed by the tequila nazis(if you care about that sort of thing...I don't) due to their storied background. Of course, you'll also get snubbed for drinking anything anejo... :)

    My favorites?

    El Tesoro Reposado and Anejo
    Don Julio 1942 Anejo
Some of the Herruderra small batch stuff.

Guess I'm not snobbish enough - I think Cuervo gold is just fine for sipping straight or mixing. Love it in a Tequila & Coke.

Now here's one for ya - why can you find 20 different Tequilas at your local supermarket, yet not find a single Mescal? :(

If I drink whiskey then I wake up feeling terrible and the same with wine. For some reason, really good tequila doesn't give me a bad hangover.

I love margaritas--don't enjoy sipping tequila. But in a pinch, Sauza's premixed is very good.

Are you sure about that? Explain how things like Godiva Liqueur and Hypnotiq, which are both below 20%, as well as Baileys Irish Cream.
