That old car smell is back! 1970 Aston DBSV8

Thanks. I’m working on some of the mechanical and electrical issues. Just figured out last night that while all the fuses are good they were corroded and some were not making contact so I’m getting new fuses and I’ll clean the fuse box contacts. Pretty easy because there are only 12 fuses. Once I get the new fuses that should resolve some more issues. Just moving the fuses got the side lights working and I got the turn signals working as well. I also have an appointment with a local shop to get new tires installed and change the transmission and differential fluid. I’ll probably get most of the mechanical issues resolved around the time they salt the roads and I have to stop driving it.

Hopefully I can get the trunk carpets sorted out over the winter.

I'm kinda amazed how good the engine sounds right out of the box without any tuning.

So a quick update. Drove the car to a local European car shop and had them install new tires and change the transmission and differential fluid. When I got the car back I was checking some of the fluids and noticed the brake fluid level was a lot lower than when I originally filled it before I started driving it.

The car has a firm pedal but the brakes don’t seem to work that well, like there is no power assist. I couldn’t find any leaks so I did some research. Turns out the brake boosters can leak internally and fill up with brake fluid. I didn’t see any fluid in the vacuum line but inside the booster was full of brake fluid. Other one had the same problem. So I removed both of them and will send them off to be rebuilt this week.

Also removed the tachometer and will be sending it out to be rebuilt. The roads are heavily salted now so I can’t drive it until spring anyway. More to follow in the spring.

 

Got the tach back from Palo Alto Speedometer. It looks like new. Before and after pictures.

It looks like new. They also converted it so it will work with the electronic distributor. Now I just need to figure out how to hook it up.

 

I got the rebuilt brake boosters back and got them installed but I need to bleed the brakes again, which requires removing the back seat -again. On the plus side, the car should be ready for more test drives once the salt is off the roads.

Bled the brakes and took the car for a short drive.

Good news, tachometer is now working.

Bad news
-brakes work but still no power assist, I’m guessing the problem is a lack of vacuum probably from as leaking vacuum hose etc.

Also disconnected the speedometer to see if the cable was turning when the car was moving and it was, so the speedometer likely needs to be rebuilt.

I’ve made some progress on the cold start problem, I can jump the cold start injector to inject fuel and the car starts better but still not easily. I’m thinking the cold regulator (or whatever it’s called) on the Bosch injection pump isn’t working or needs adjustment.

The only thing that is preventing me from driving the car is no power assist on the brakes. The boosters were just rebuilt, the car is generating vacuum and I can’t find any leaks in the vacuum hose, so I’ll do some more investigating this weekend. Really hoping I don’t have to remove the boosters again or bleed the brakes again.
