Hi Ivan, of course. Just came back from the first drive of the year with the Mistral you drove. Just turned the key and it started immediately after five months sleeping.
I'll eat someone's hat if that thing weighs 1400kg. 1600kg is the more appropriate number. Just the engine alone weighs something like 500lbs great post!
Thanks for posting this. Here's a small aside to complement Ferriripilot's comment: I took it out for a water pump replacement, so there are a few items already removed. Add those back in and the total is 553 lbs, of which more than 29 are for the AC compressor and clutch. That weight also includes the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disk. that is a heavy lump of aluminum. That is about what a Daytona engine weighs as well. I believe the ZF transaxle weighs about 160lbs too. Combine that with the very heavy rear hatch and additional tubing for the removable engine cradle and we have the additional 500-600lbs more weight compared to a late Merak SS. I weighed my ‘80 Merak with half tank of fuel and it came in at 2913lbs. I also weighed the engine and gearbox after rebuilt. The engine is 340lbs with flywheel and clutch, gearbox is 108lbs. The Merak crankshaft is a serious boat anchor at some 43lbs and the flywheel is 23lbs which is just absurd for this type of engine. There’s 10bhp lost in that crank and flywheel being far too heavy than necessary alone. If it were a diesel towing things daily then I might understand…..To get one of these to rev a bit better an aluminum flywheel is the first order of business. Maserati made aluminum flywheels for the very late 4v Merak race engines while the earlier race engine flywheels looked like Swiss cheese with dozens of lightening holes drilled. The cranks were also significantly lightened but not sure how much lighter they got them down to.
The previously discussed ‘Group 4 style’ Monster Bora had resurfaced on BaT. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-maserati-bora-2/ Fun for the Summer everyone!! Best to all. Mark
Afternoon chaps. I have taken on a part restored Bora for a friend of mine in the UK. Between the 2 or three people whom have worked on it a bunch of the parts have gone missing. Does anyone on here know of or have any parts? First issue is the entire radiator pack/Fan/cowel/header tank is missing. I have the car running but I want to run it to temp before I confirm the engine as a runner and strip for paint. we need all the glass with the exception of the rear screen, window regulators and A pillar stainless trims to start. I’ve already spoken to Andy Heywood but does not have them currently. So any help appreciated.
I suggest you study this. https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Maserati/Bora/Bora/PartDiagrams There is no header tank up front near the radiator. An original radiator itself is not something you should look for as it is inadequate unless the goal is a very high end original car. The rest however is. Though you probably can fabricate the rest. Better fans and a radiator are a good idea which may be why they've been pulled out of the car and are now missing. Original does not equal better functioning. You have quite a challenge.
Thanks, I have an account with Eurospares and I am familiar with the diagrams and have the parts books. A used oem one would be a good place to start or the overall measurements to get me started.
A 2" thick core fits quite easily. Is the AC condenser also missing? The original fans are nothing special. They were used on many Mercedes, Bosch. If you look on Ivan's website Ivanthe carnut there's a parts XREF and I'd bet they're listed on it. Does the car's radiator vent through the hood or just underneath? You could try searching on here for the radiator dimensions. I think it's been discussed before. You might event get reference for a place that builds better ones out of aluminum. I believe Borologist has a place in the UK that did his.
Great I have PM’d him for help. I don’t have anything, other than the two pipes that come up the centre of the car and connect to the horns of the rad.
Why not make an enquiry through the Merak group .As there were more Meraks built and many of the parts are interchangeable
I looked up the Merak cooling parts and it’s a different rad. Someone else told me they were the same but are not
Maybe you can persuade one of the "project" sellers to sell some parts to you? But there are always Merak-projecs no Bora-projects.
Hi Conaero. That sounds like a challenging job! (But very worthwhile) There is a Maserati QPIII radiator and fans plus shroud on ebay in Bristol with item number 284361485160 which may be worth a look. I have just used Aaron radiator in London to recore my Ghibli rad, and they were excellent. As others have said, Merak parts may be your best bet for glass. Failing that, Antii at sicurvetro in Finland will make a new windscreen for you. He is great to deal with. Hope locating parts is not too arduous, although I suspect you will have some fabrication to do. Keep up updated and all the best. Mark
