Great insights. I am aligned myself with your points, even myself, who have the means, I just can’t justify spending $2 mil on a car that I have loved and lusted for my whole life. So the market/opportunity of funds/competition/market dynamics changing of course are considered. I see F40 as “beyond a car” and associated migraine inducing issues being cast aside and it being valued in the future as something more. Of all the potential 250s looking for homes, I doubt that even one of those could be had for less than $25mil

F40 is worth $2.5-3.5 currently,…. Until it isn’t. Either Stratosphericly up or another ride down, On both sides of the ledger, there will be people to say, i told you so.

I agree with you that higher prices should mean less potential buyers, but I would also point out the number of people in the UHNWI pool world wide is growing, and is forecast to continue to grow. Maybe for some of them these things are not seen as mere cars but something more. I wonder if the pool of potential buyers with means might actually grow as the price gets higher- there may be people who would not spend the time on something below a few million dollars, because they only have so much "mind share"...

However, forecasts aren't always right, and human preferences can be fickle.

This is spot on, this dynamic definitely exists, we see it with cars that have been ignored for decades (e.g. F50s that sat at $650k for a decade) then becoming desirable once they break the $1m mark. Will F40s become static pieces of art worth materially more than today? Not impossible. I can’t help hoping not, as bored billionaires will never drive them and will be swapping them between themselves like we see with California spiders.

The only way this works without a currency crises, is if humanoid robots truly create abundance of things to the point that currency has less meaning. Then some items like fine art, some great cars, and the best residential real estate will trade crazy crazy high. Imagine?

It depends if the car is actually for sale, or just fishing at a number that will stroke the owner's ego.

Actual transaction price would probably be in the mid-to-high €3mm area.

Ego stroke price I could see up to €5mm... But why stop there? Might as well go all the way to the €12mm proposed in the other thread

Given the choice, at least for me it’s the F40 all day long. The LaF is spectacular though

a 458 Speciale Aperta is rumored to have recently sold at $2 mil....
once again, as in my original opener to this thread, this disrupts the stack values, and should logically mean that the F40, in equal condition, should now exceed $4 mil.

alternatively, i guess you could also surmise that the buyer of the SA has more dollars than sense, and cannot drive a manual.... :)

You may be right on both numbers but they aren’t necessarily correlated other than a broadly strong market in collector Ferraris as the rich are doing well in this environment.

In the last 15 years I have seen some 1960s cars go up by 10 times and then halve and during the same time F40 has also done 10 times but it’s still going.

I think the 458 SA is in a different bucket to F40 age wise and might be preferred by younger collectors to super cars from the last millenium which now provide a somewhat vintage experience. The super cars are of course desirable for the fact they are the super cars.

I guess I’m making the point that cars in the different age buckets can move in the same direction or in opposite directions depending on what’s in vogue.

There are many buckets so this is an oversimplification but it seems to me that:

60/70s cars are sideways to down and some cases strongly down

    super cars strongly up

    limited edition SPs strongly up

other modern limited editions also up

    new hybrids strongly down

new production cars sideways to down

I’m probably forgetting some other buckets.
