Like James Dean's 550 Spyder did (which will probably be the next car to "re-appear"). Come to think of it, George Barris and David Piper are sort of similar.
Welcome back, 'Napolis - caught the beginnings of a paragraph regarding your collection, but, apparently need to be subscribed to read further. Is it possible to copy/paste the entire article here?
I can't believe this thread has slipped so far back. I hope the body work is still going along OK. Paul M
All complete. In the paint shop. Will be ready to head over to the Targa Florio in May along with 002C. Sal and John did some job. She really looks great in proper P 3/4 configuration. I think 0854 will look great in proper coupe configuration as well. Best
I'm off on an expedition for a bit in a place where there's only emergency communication so I'll be out of touch but I will get shoot some upon my return. Those in the NY metro area are welcome to come by in early May before we ship for a view. We did find one very interesting thing. Remember how we hand mixed/ tinted the paint on the coupe configuration of 0846? When we scannned the original paint on 0854's coupe tail we found that we had come up with by eye an almost exact match to what the color really was. IMO there are a number of vintage cars with resprays that have a bit too little violet mixed in. When we originally spoke to PPG about this they agreed but pointed out that over the years "Rossa Corsa" had migrated from what it was to a bit more RED. Good to hear all's coming along. I can't remember if this shot has been posted before - 0846 at Sebring in 1966 in P3 form driven by Bob Bondurant (photo Pete Lyons from Autosport mag) http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/3028/0846seb66bon1jm.jpg Paul M
I know that you guys don't like Corvette analogies,....so here's another one. The original RED paint for 1957 Corvettes was called Venetian Red. Many restored cars are VERY red. But the original color had quite a bit of an orange hue to it. Chevrolet also had a 1957 Corvette paint called Cascade Green that most people would more realistically call a light "blueish" color. As JG indicates, the modern paint equivalent colors seem to drift as the years go by.
Compare the photo Marcel posted in the Old Photo's thread of the P3 with the deck lid up. Note the transmission. Compare it with the photo of the transmission on page 7 of the 0846 document. Compare it with the photo on page 6. Two of the gearboxes are Ferrari P3 one is Ferrari F1.
After just reading the complete file on this , IMHO there are real cars w/major history, real cars with some minor history, and real cars. Everything else is simply what it is, and anyone else is kidding himself. If you really believe, it might come true, especially with 0846.
It's funny how things come out. Today Marcel sent me some more photos. In addition to absolutely proving that Macca was right about the gearbox that's now in 0846 another photo IMHO absolutely proves that the chassis is original as well. Note the gusset that I previously posted the remnants of that's on the P3 chassis that's in 0846 today in 0846's press day photo... It's the little one in the upper right side at 10 a clock off the round air duct that goes up behind the center section rear opening to the cockpit. That someone would have faked the remains of that P3 gusset on the chassis that's in my car today is not credible. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Moving along we're reopened 0854's central nose duct and are fitting her original doors. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
hey now! lower alabama is a cultural mecca! i havent heard that (LA = lower alabama) from outside alabama before!?
Jim, How much more information on the oddities of your car can you prove? The gusset thing definitely is a little odd. Why someone would go to such odd lengths to make the exact same weld in the exact same place on your car as was last seen on 0846 seem far fetched....unless your car IS 0846. At this stage I'd think it'd be fairly reprehensible to say that your car isn't 0846 anymore. Irregardless, I'd like to know exactly which gusset I should be looking at in Marcel's wonderful photo. Is it the red or green circle? I originally thought red, but I saw that little tube or something under the round opening so I drew in another possibility as well. Hi The one in the red circle. I've re posted the vestigial weld as we found it on 0846 and the gusset as it exists today in 0854 which is also a P3 Chassis. I agree that there is only one explanation. Your green circle is interesting as well. It doesn't look as if Ferrari had gotten around to affixing 0846's chassis plate yet...
