The passing dilema in F1 - What's your take?

How many times did Sir Lewis Hamilton get penalized for driving some one off track, particularly this year? Its impossible for me side step on something the stewards didn't do. The stewards saw that Max's driving warranted a penalty. Many of you and I agree. Other drivers they didn't see that a penalty was necessary. Max made those driving decisions, no need to blame the stewards or anybody else.

 

And round and round we go…. Where we stop? Nobody knows.

 

Its the standard of driving and its the drivers. Not just the tracks. There has to be a ballance to safety and difficulty of the track. tracks today are safe, but they require more rules since we are basically racing on giant autocross tracks... there is little fear than there was before. Monaco, Spa, Monza, Zandvoort, Suzuka , Montreal are all tracks that have still personal penalties if you get it wrong. Places like Spain, Silverstone France, all are just huge run off areas... then track in between

 

Its painful, but if you look at the history, Villeneuve was a dangerous guy when he first started... by 82 He had mellowed and started to use his head. His best year in 79, it was a cross between wild and studied. The difference is that Senna did it on purpose... Villeneuve did it because he was not thinking and having a good time. ( at least that is my belief). Lauda said that He trusted racing against Villeneuve the most even though he was wild. Villeneuve did not think he was better than anyone else, but he just was going to push to the limit of him and the car at all times.

 

I don't think they're getting that balance right anymore. I'm not arguing for a return of the safety standards of the 1960s, but risk has a role in motorsports.

Regardless, they could use more gravel, grass, etc. in lieu of paved runoff. This would have minimal safety consequences and stop - or at least discourage - this nonsense.

 

I agree. But its a no go. They have to use some form of Tech - that just automatically stops the driver from any advantage of going off track.. .or maybe getting too close side to side? kind of like lane departure stuff... the tech is there its just how you use it.

 

For track limit violations, that's a great idea.

However, to improve passing etiquette and quality, I think the key is to create the incentive for the driver on the outside to hold his line and accept the risk suspension damage. Getting briefly slowed isn't enough - there needs to be a substantially high risk of your race ending if you go off track.

If that risk existed, you'd see more drivers stand their ground when being passed. Initially, we'd see more collisions. Pretty quickly, they'd all learn that if they want to pass, they better not be counting on the other guy to get out of the way.

I agree, however, that it's a no go. F1 is too corporate and sanitized to add back even the slightest physical risks. It's a one way street.

 

1- follow the wxisting rules
2- create a diamond lane for those carring 2 or more passengers

 

Monaco, Australia and Singapore have solved the problem

 

Canada has a nice wall. Should add more lol

 

Another circuit that doesn't allow too many excentricities is Macao !
I always enjoy watching the racing there, even the bikes.

I'm shocked they kept Herbert as steward for Brasil, he is clearly despises and envies Max.

 

Here's my take on the "passing dilemma."

This is a BILLION dollar racing industry. We have seen inconsistencies in these rules throughout the era's of F1...that's a given because the stewards are always different in every race hence to why you have inconsistencies in the penalties.....race after race.....season after season.

I propose not just 4 different stewards, but a multitude of stewards whom can "steward" via LinkedIn or some other platform race after race from all across the nationalities. Majority wins the penalty(s).

That's my 2 cents......

 

F1 has become very boring.

Try kart racing in Miami with a bunch of Brazilians! Lol, this old guy stopped going there for fear of dying!

need more tire options. trying to “fire up” the tires is just stupid. use tires that work with your chassis.
