Now that Austin is on the official FIA calendar, will the race really happen?

  1. Yes, it will happen.

  2. No, no way for construction to finish.

Good luck to those fans out of a rental now. There is nothing available miles around the track.

    At least not for booking.

I talked with an entertainer last night, about my "party', "mass gathering", amplified music, whatever.

A brief conversation, no real resolution, except he was interested in doing it!

    Rave on....

On the one hand they are trying to insure Public Safety, housing standards, etc.

OTOH, it's a little late to be issuing "absolute edicts" without a grace period on enforcement, one month (or less) before the event.

Keep Austin weird.....given the number of homeless transients the City has always had, it's rather comical, if it were not for the real world impact and frustration.

So, a friend of mine is heading over to Austin (from the UK) and has tickets for the race... But nowhere to stay.

Does anyone (local?) have any good ideas? American Express concierge could only find him a hotel 70-80 miles away...

    Cheers!

Have him send me a PM, but WAY back in this thread I recommended the Bed and Breakfasts in New Bransfels, about a 55 minute drive from the track.

Many chatters have booked in there (Gruene is actually the tiny town along the river) and so we may even get a shuttle or ??? working from there.

Member 'barnyard' is also offering a camping/RV option from even closer, in Bastrop
Lost Pines Resort is there, and offering heli shuttle to guests.

Worst case he can crash with me.... :D :D :D :D

    Wow, that was fast, thanks!

Passed some of that on (I'll keep the Swedes to myself for now I think ;)). He's not a member here but I'll pass things on!

My daughter's apartment is in the Sorority house itself, about 225 lovelies there....:D

I have several old classmates (now homeowners) from my days at University there...worst case we'll put him in a tent, in the yard....:D

I'm sorry the hotel industry there has taken this event as some kind of feeding frenzy, Texas is really the "Drop on over and stay awhile" kind of State.

The Stag Party at my friend's place, people walking by on South Congress, (an entertainment district now, of sorts) took it for a public Concert event.
We let them stay and drink whiskey, if the girl was cute....

We told them: "No, Ray Wylie Hubbard is at Lucy's Fried Chicken, two houses on down..." :D :D :D

I sent a PM to our member "barnyard" to see how his place is booking up..

It's a 400 acre ranch, hard along the banks of the Colorado River...sounds beautiful.

He and I had talked several times via pm about helping the FChat members with their Fcar parking at one of the buildings he has downtown but that was at the beginning and long before I looked into volunteering. I also forgot that I gave my tent away to a hunter who was on my dads deer lease so camping on one of his properties is now out of the question.

With the race barely over 4 weeks away I am not even sure I can make it now for my first and last time to see MS race, haz sad! :(

Dude, I ride Greyhound, to bring my cars back after a hurricane....

There's tents in estate sales pretty often...or check Goodwill!

That's the one thing I noticed about F1 at Indy, everyone is "flying in on the Concorde" and there was VERY little of the "camping out at Lemans" mindset.

    Don't know why, really.

    Everybody sees the same race....

Those two Swedish girls would cheer you right up!
(My friends stepdaughters, don't get cute)

We are going to roll the GTB into the front yard, add Tivoli lighting, and turn it into a champagne fountian...

We WERE going to hang it 30' in the air, with floodlighting from a crane, like Goodwood, but with all the Permit issues with the City we decided to slide on that.... :D :D :D

Qualifing on the 17th will be at noon, and the race will be at one on Sunday. Looking good, Billy Ray!

Are there any meet-ups planned at the track? (preferrably near a beer stand)

COTA's Grand Opening is apparently this weekend. Talk about keeping it on the down low. I don't think anyone in Austin even knows.

Andretti and Dempsey to drive the Lotus F1 Team R30 in Austin

We did know that Bob Varsha is in town this weekend "on assignment" from twitter, so I guess Speed is doing some coverage. Perhaps for the next F1 pre-race show.

On the downside, rumor is going around that the planned USGP live coverage from Austin by Speed has been nixed due to the change of format for the channel (and loss of F1 contract for next year). Fox doesn't want to spend the money.

I just checked for ticket prices on www.formula1.com for the Austin GP and basically found nothing. That's rather bizarre as you can buy tix for all other races.

All they sell is a weekend pass for turn 15 at the ridiculous rate of 975 pounds.

    What's going on here?
