I shot nearly 1000 images at the USGP 06 Indy. I was in turn six for the entire race, either in the stands shooting over the fence, or on the ground shooting through a hole in the fence. Once again, I am pawing through them looking for some special shots (my eyes glaze over after about 200 shots).

I noted how horrible Schumi's tires looked on his victory lap, compared to his parade lap.

Nice pics. What you're seeing there is the "marbles" he's picked up on his cool-down lap. All drivers do this intentionally to gain weight: they drive off-line into the bits of rubber that have been gathering all race and let the hot tires pick up as much as possible.

Why would they want to gain weight?

I could understand the tire company not wanting the public to see how ratty the tires look after a race, and covering them up with marbles would show how sticky they are as well as obscure the damage.

Upon further review, it is obvious in my pictures that Michael is driving way off-line on his victory lap (turn 6 anyway), but I would have thought the only reason would to be closer to the cheering fans (tifosi) as he waves his fist in victory.

Here is a shot from about mid-race that shows the tread getting funky. Note the tire chunks on the pavement. According to the F1 website [ http://www.formula1.com/race/circuitmap/760.html ] F1 cars pull 2.0 G in this corner.

Here are some more images. The top one is from a mid-race lap, the second one is from the last hot lap of the race. Note that the heat disturbs the air directly above and behind the car. These were taken at 1/2000th of a second, while the third image was take at 1/60th of a second. Panning with the Ferrari really puts the other cars in a state of blur.

I posted some other cool F1 USGP 06 Indy pictures in the "Chicago" region area. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118385

They want to gain weight because there is a minimum weight all the cars have to be. Right after the race, all the cars are weighed. All the drivers pick up that rubber on their tyres to get all the extra weight they can get. It can make a big difference.

    Hungarian GP this year:

"BMW Sauber F1 Team - Hungarian GP - Kubica disqualified
The BMW Sauber F1.06 driven in the Hungarian Grand Prix by Robert Kubica was subsequently disqualified. He had finished in seventh place. The Pole and the BMW Sauber Team lose two world championship points.

Willy Rampf (Technical Director): "During the post-race technical inspection of the car, it was found to be two kilograms underweight. The reason for this is that the intermediate tyres on Robert's car were in use for 51 laps and had sustained unexpected high rubber wear. That was the case above all in the final stages of the race on a dry track. There's no ambiguity about being underweight, we just have to accept it. The FIA made it clear that there is no question of any implied intention."
