Marcel, The original color chip for Verde Medio 106-G-29 is a light metallic green (broadly similar to what one would associate with Aston Martin green, but not same). I have also seen this original color, untouched, on a 275. It is much lighter than the Del Rio car. The Del Rio green is a solid color and 106-G-29 is metallic. I believe the Del Rio color is unique and different, but yes, beautiful.

I have written factory confirmation (from 1967) that the Del Rio car #09831 was painted originally Verde Medio 106-G-29. See also pix in Automobile Quarterly of 1969. The Del Rio 275 GTB/4 #09831 was the ONLY four-cam painted originally in Verde Medio 106-G-29. Of the total of 330 Ferrari 275 GTB/4s built, ten (10) cars were originally painted green, but various shades including Verde Medio, Verde Scuro and Verde Pino. Because the Del Rio four-cam is the only one originally painted in Verde Medio 106-G-29 the color was soon nick-named Del Rio Green.

There are stunning greens such as verde scuro or verde pino, my favorite, particulalry with tan or pumpkin leather however there are downright scary and thankfully rare greens such as this 246, seen at the 60th anniversary celebrations at Fiorano.

    If this can help...

I have a Ferrari book of personnalized colours part of the "Programma di personalizzatione Carrozzeria Scaglietti", with 1950's and 1960's colours.

One colour is Verde Abetone, which is very dark metallic forest green, with an illustration of a 1966 330GTC.

    Here's scan from the pages...

Note that the scan makes the colour turn "olive" but the paint swatch is actually a very dark forest green...

    Merci Christian.

The book looks very nice! I'm not sure if you can find it at a dealership. I got mine directly at the factory... It has just beautiful vintage colours with romantic names like: Avorio, Celeste Met, Azzuro Met, Vinaccia...

We have not updated the web site for a while because we're working on our fall collection... more news to come in interior decoration ;-)

    Thank you for that Matthias.

I think they had troppo Lambrusco when they chose that color...

Speaking of green it reminds me of a funny episode long ago. When I was 18 in 1982 I spent easter in England to visit all the garages and one day took a train all the way up to Greypaul Motors in Leicestershire. I visited what was an amazing facility, took photos for hours in there: they just let me wander as I pleased. There were a couple of P cars including I would assume the future Obrist P4. One thing that struck me was a Lusso or a 330LMB painted bottle green...except the owner had done it himself...and had locked up his cat in the improvised paint chamber and of course the kitty had walked all over the car leaving prints on the whole paint job!:)
Disgusted he then asked Greypaul to sort it out!

I still have the photos somewhere, it was quite a trip, I visited Maranello Concessionaires, David Piper who hosted me very kindly at his house nearby, Duncan Hamiltons who had a RHD Daytona spyder, Heathmans which was quite a dealership...but am veering off topic sorry!

    best regards,

    Marc

Marcel, as I remember the article said that Del Rio had the car painted to match his swatch and that Ferrari liked it enough to make it available on order. Was it in fact a factory color before then? I loved the combination then and still do.
    Thanks,
    David

Thank you Paul: I may actually have a chance to dig them out in the next month!

It was quite a trip that....even the taxi driver who took me from Maranello Concessionaires to David Piper's house turned out to be...one of David's former mechanics! I also got a ride in a black Lusso with number plate LUS50 from Maranello Concessionaires littel showroom near a roundabout and their workshop base a few miles away. I had to wipe the rain from the inside of the windshield the whole time!

    Best regards,

    Marc

Marcel, I appreciate and respect your research with the Factory on the Del Rio car and do not doubt your effort or the information reported. However, I think the Factory record on this is mistaken. I have an original Scaglietti color sample booklet clearly dated from 1966. It includes the color Verde Medio Metallizzatto with the name and number 106-G-29 printed on the back. I have compared this color chip to the hidden original paint behind the sail panel of a 275 GTB confirmed by the Factory records to be color 106-G-29. The match is exact and the color is a light metallic green. I speculate that the Factory, for lack of another name, generically assigned Verde Medio to the custom Del Rio color also and then simply - and mistakenly - carried over the same code number too (then or now). I have seen the Del Rio and I am familiar with the AQ article. The Del Rio green (darker and non-metallic) and the 106-G-29 color are not at all the same; I am convinced the records are flawed in this case. Thanks for sharing your notes.

Please indicate the serial number of the car "confirmed by the Factory records to be color 106-G-29". Thank you.
Only three 275 GTBs were originally painted Verde Medio 106-G-29, S/Ns are 08191, 08545 and 08619.

I agree with you Verde Medio Metallizzatto 106-G-29 is definitely light green metallic. Look at hidden places at your car (inside door panels, behind the removed dashboard) and you will find the original color. Make pics of the original color at that hidden places and contact Ferrari Classiche, interesting what they will tell you.

Marcel, we have to remember that the Factory records are not 100% precise in every case. Friend of mine has a 206 which definitely had still it's original paint. Ferrari Classiche stated the car Viola. They searched Viola on the car but didn't find. After some discussions Ferrari Classiche stated it Rosso Dino as it was from it's first day.

I fully agree that the factory records are not 100% correct and accurate.
And NO, my information and documents do NOT come from the Classiche Department.
They come from the old Factory Foglio Allestimenti documents from the mid/late 1960s. These are the factory lists where each car is mentioned with the individual original equipment (such as LHD or RHD, alloy or steel body, rollbar, wire wheels, carpet colors, instruments in KM or Miles, headrests, air conditioning, power windows, rear luggage shelfs, etc.) and colors. Plus name of the dealer/importer and first owners.
Below is a small extract of those old documents, this one here dates from September 1966. In the case of 09831 (the Del Rio car) I believe what happened is that originally (in the beginning) the plan was to have it painted Verde Medio 106-G-29 and before the painting the client (Daniel Del Rio) changed his mind or somebody at the factory decided to have it painted in a different, deeper and non-metallic color (as we know it today). And then, of course, the factory administration forgot to update their file with the new name of the other color.

You are right because there where no Glidden & Salchi colors (106-G-29 is G & S) used for 275. Factory started with colors from Glidden & Salchi mid of 1969 (Source: Keith Bluemel, Ferrari V12).

Edit: Ok I see Keith Bluemel is wrong!

Here is an excerpt of the "Foglio Allestimenti" dating from May 1966 and one can see the details for 08619.

Interesting, I know that Karajan also had a silver Lusso. Truly a Ferrari enthusiast.
