I have not tried to look at them in the dark. I can do that tomorrow but I dont think they are working at all

the AC works and the vents blow air

What do you call this unit?

Does anyone know how to repair the light bars? is it just a bulb or something more involved

    thanks!

It's the indicator for the percentage of air coming out of the adjustable side flaps of the AC unit into the footwells (although I can't recall if more bars = more air into footwells or the other way around). Have you tried using the rocker switches at the sides of that display to adjust?

    More bars = more air.

If I remember correctly it works like the similar units in 328. The control sends a message to move the flaps and the little lights respond to feed back from basically a pot signaling how far the flaps have indeed opened.

Yes, i have tried both rocker switches, no bars at all. I did not know what to call this to search for a threat on how to repair it.

How is this different from the circular flat knob that controls the amount of air coming out the vents?

The knob controls the fan speed. The rockers control where it goes.

The shop manual has a very good chapter on the HVAC system.

Do you have an owners manual? This is all covered there.

Does anyone have a link the 1985 Testarossa repair manuals?

Since we are on the subject. How about the repair manuals for 1994 512tr?

If more air comes out, the displays are suspect. But if the air volume is constant, I would suspect the switches not making contact. They pry up and are easy to disassemble, clean, re grease and reassemble. There might be a fuse in the trunk, check up there first.

Here is a thread of the switches taken apart. IIRC the guts of the switch are the same, only the cover is different.
