Let's just all take a page from the NSA handbook and apply it to their own situation:

    Answering Questions About Your Employment
Certainly, you may tell your family and friends that you are employed at or assigned to the National Security Agency. There is no valid reason to deny them this information. However, you may not disclose to them any information concerning specific aspects of the Agency's mission, activities, and organization. You should also ask them not to publicize your association with NSA.

Should strangers or casual acquaintances question you about your place of employment, an appropriate reply would be that you work for the Department of Defense. If questioned further as to where you are employed within the Department of Defense, you may reply, "NSA." When you inform someone that you work for NSA (or the Department of Defense) you may expect that the next question will be, "What do you do?" It is a good idea to anticipate this question and to formulate an appropriate answer. Do not act mysteriously about your employment, as that would only succeed in drawing more attention to yourself.

If you are employed as a secretary, engineer, computer scientist, or in a clerical, administrative, technical, or other capacity identifiable by a general title which in no way indicates how your talents are being applied to the mission of the Agency, it is suggested that you state this general title. If you are employed as a linguist, you may say that you are a linguist, if necessary. However, you should not indicate the specific language(s) with which you are involved.

The use of service specialty titles which tend to suggest or reveal the nature of the Agency's mission or specific aspects of their work. These professional titles, such as cryptanalyst, signals collection officer, and intelligence research analyst, if given verbatim to an outsider, would likely generate further questions which may touch upon the classified aspects of your work. Therefore, in conversation with outsiders, it is suggested that such job titles be generalized. For example, you might indicate that you are a "research analyst." You may not, however, discuss the specific nature of your analytic work.

Asking what someone 'does for a living' is often regarded as a very American question- a way of sizing someone up in our 'casteless' society. (In other societies, they often know exactly where you stand in the social heirarchy without having to ask).
Driving an exotic car already answers the question- gee, does that person have money?- whether or not the car really costs alot. (Witness all the discussions here about 308 ownership = perception of wealth, at least among people who are not car-literate). Then question then is really obnoxious- ie, how are you able to afford to buy that? (Which could be read, ala FarmerDave's method of interpretation, to mean: gee, I'd like to know how to afford one too). But, the reality is, telling them the answer, 'lawyer, baker, dildo, candlestick maker' is not really an answer either, is it? Yes, I'm usually polite when i'm out with the car- and I'll certainly answer any real question about the car without attitude- but usually, that one "what do you do" and (I love this one:) people who pull up in traffic and ask "How much that cost" don't deserve an answer. I'm not rude when I don't answer them, but I don't usually answer them. (If, in the course of a real discussion about the car, the question of its price, market value, etc. comes up, of course i'll answer that- i'm just talking about the shout-out, one-liner).

Murcie: Excellent Idea. From now on, I'll just say i work for the NSA.

I was in a shopping center photographing 9 Ferraris on Saturday and no less than 4 people came up to me and asked if doctor ******** was in there with our group. All four people were asking about different doctors.
Just about everyone that walked by would ask what was going on.

I have never asked any Ferrari owner what they do for a living. All I care about is the car, I could care less how they obtained it.

I'm usually one of the younest people at our local events and people always ask me which Ferrari is mine and I just pause, sigh and say, "I'm in the Honda over there" and point to the other side of the paking lot. :(
If I did own one, I'm sure the next question would be what do I do for a living.

I'm going to call BS here. Mike, this just sounds like a kiss@$$ noob thing to say.

Once you've seen a few 360's you've seen them all. Frankly, going to events for me it's 95% about the great people I meet and only 5% about their possessions... and that's when there is something really different like a vintage, one-off, special edition, etc.

Believe what you want, but it's true. Ask Sfumato...on Saturday when they were all eating breakfast I was outside photographing the cars. I only spent about 10 minutes inside talking to people.
Sfumato came outside and asked if I was going to come inside and eat and I just told him, "no, I just want to photograph the cars".
Maybe you and I just have different personalities.

I'm with Mike here.. I don't think I've ever asked that question directly (unless that topic was already touched upon in conversation) as I find it to be somewhat rude. Yes, I may be somewhat interested, but it's really none of my business.

FWIW, Darth really made his cash by contracting midgets who will come to your home and hold down that pesky corner of your fitted sheet. :) :)

Someone told me what Darth does for a living, but I didn't ask the person, it just came up in discussion.
I do believe him though, because it would explain why Darth has so much extra time on his hands.:)

darth - telling them half-truths is not fair.

dildos, yes, but he only specializes in motorizes and ergonomically correct ones and his factory is actually in the hollywood bowl

I think we should look to Arthur for the best response: "I race cars, play tennis, and fondle women, BUT! I have weekends off, and I am my own boss."

"I'm so rich, I wish I had a dime for every dime I have."
