    Hi Ed,

The water pump housings of the Dino, F1, F2 as well as the V12 and later flat 12 GP engines uses alot of magnesium housing and other components. As long as they remain wet with water soluable oil treatement or tetra-ethelyne glycol mixtures etc... no problem. If they are stored dry a quick and cheap way to preserve them is with a good coating of WD-40. We have found quite a few that were not taken care of or stored improperly. You can still get replacement parts from various sources. I have had great luck with Motor Motori and Sport Auto in Modena. They are providing parts now for Ferrari. Of course if you go to Ferrari, you get the same part plus the Ferrari price but it does come in a cool Ferrari baggie!

    Cheers,

    Bill

Long ago and far away; anybody remember what Kirk White had this example listed for in one of his (Circa 1970-71) sales flyers?

Shown here at the Palo-Alto Concours during the mid/late 70s.

There is a good book on the cars called "Ferrari 312 &512 Sports Racing Cars, The Porsche Hunters" by Ian Bamsey if anyone's interested. Bought mine on ebay for $170.

No but I'll give you a ride in P 3/4, or a 412P. Next time you're in the area give me a call. As for 512 parts John Hajduk has TONS of parts. The sources Bill mentioned can help as well.

    ANdrew

That car would be impossible to build for that price and is very well done BUT it's not a 512 or even a 512 bitsa or a 512 chassis plate car of which as Bill said there are several.

If your Dad is still interested I can point him in the right direction.

    Lessee.. "French Kiss"...yep...I'm good there.

    '312 & 512/The P Hunters'....THIS book is worth $170??? Wow!

I should inventory for insurance with new $$ #s!

French Kiss has a lot of good 'tales' in it.....although you realize McQueen was human after all with some bad decisons there...

One could argue the Donohue car was a replica, after Penske and Traco finished with it...;)

Not really .......they did remake the tub, IIRC...

I'd think you'd need a ton of parts or so....sounds about right.....

    One of my favorites also...

Mario once told me the 312PB was the finest machine he ever handled......he got kind of distant and misty eyed for a moment..

I think that it is a small capacity Alpine-Renault, and the "rudders" were just that, to keep it in a straight line on the Mulsanne. They weren't much into downforce in those days !

The blue car is a CD Sp66 (Peugeot). Appeared at LM in 66 and 67

The aerodynamics for these cars were designed by Choulet (who also later went on to do the body designs for the 917LH and the Matra 640)

Is the blue car an Alpine M64?

Weren't folks still experimenting with aerodynamics in the mid sixties?

I defer to the experts but I would guess the rudders are an experiment.

It is a Peugeot? I apologize for not reading all posts before responding!

This blue car is a CD with Peugeot engine (4 in-line 1149 cc). CD is for Charles Deutsch, the man who worked with René Bonnet for the DB-Panhard in the early '50s.
Two cars were entered in 1967 and were DNF. Design is from Robert Choulet who worked for the Matra 640 and the Porsche 917 LH 1971.

How did the Peugeots place in the '66 or '67 season (did they race both?)?

Not a Peugeot, but a CD with Peugeot engine. The first CDs 1962 were Panhard engined, as did the DB before (note the very first DBs 1949 were Citroën engined. DB was for Deutsch-Bonnet : they separated in 1962. Then one became CD, the other René Bonnet until Matra bought his company). The CDs streamline body only ran Le Mans 66 and 67. More here :

Very interesting thread, amazing to read first hand experiences of driving a 512S, I agree that its one of the best looking Ferrari race cars, now a 412P and a 512S would be an amazing combination to own....

    Thanks to everyone for sharing...
