The winning bidder of the blue BAT GTS is 46 years old. The under bidder is 50 years old. The buyer of the Oro Chiaro chairs and flares is 49.
Yes. BaT controls the reserve. That's a good thing in my opinion. It assures that everything listed is seriously for sale. That way neither buyer or seller's time is wasted on unrealistic expectations. Are there occasional bargains to be had there? YES. I suppose that's what draws serious bidders.
I agree that BAT has an interest in having things sold, but they also need “auctions”. BAT has a good que of auctions lined out. What about normal auction houses? Not so much. The market is very different today. If I lived in Europe, I would be working on marketing Dino’s to the US….. Buyers are here all day…
Here’s a new listing on BaT: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-ferrari-dino-246-gt-8/?utm_source=dm&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2024-01-13 Looks like a great example of a U.S. Coupe. Great colors! Looks turn-key with all its history, tools, books etc. I think this will do really well. On pure aesthetics, IMO, the coupe is more emotional and special with its roofline. Why the GTS is more $$ is a mystery to me!!!!
I have to agree about the aesthetics of the coupe. In the 3x8s, coupes generally bring more money. Particularly for later cars (QV & 328). Dinos seem to follow the old "roof comes off, price goes up" rule. I think this is just a function of relative scarcity. I agree the blue coupe currently on offer is very beautiful.
Yes, the roof line on the coupe is preferable, but when it comes to driving on a nice day, nothing beats open air and less feeling of confinement - not to mention the absence of a good air conditioner.
Yes. Values/interest in 911 targas used to be MUCH lower than coupes. Non sunroof coupes did and continue to command a premium, I think due to relative scarcity. The current 911 Targa mimics the look of the 964 and earlier Targa. Today the old 911 Targa has a following of it's own, as I think it is viewed as retro chic, but the coupe still brings more money and is the most iconic 911 configuration in most people's opinion.
Well Michael, choices. I would much prefer a '72 Targa (S) than a Dino GTS. Dino Coupe over a 911 Coupe ? Dino hands down. Go figure Regards, Alberto
So much of the 911 identity is about motorsport that the iconic 911 look is that of the coupe, the car you’d see winning races (the targa is heavier and lacks rigidity). The Dino never had motorsport aspirations, it’s more of a lifestyle vehicle, and the GTS is what many see the ultimate expression of that type of lifestyle. The GT is prettier, though…
I have a soft spot for Targas. Those with soft rear window are sought after and bring a premium. ‘69 to ‘71 in the right color combos are awesome! I have a ‘72 911S non-sunroof coupe in original Viper Green/black. Doesn’t get much better for me. A ‘67S Coupe or soft window Targa would be welcome in my garage! I think my ‘72S Coupe is the perfect pair with my ‘72 Dino Coupe. For open air I have a ‘70 914-6 w/235hp. I love it because it does so many things well, is somewhat affordable and the 914-6 has a true racing pedigree (Monte Carlo, LeMans, Sebring etc etc). I also love the timeless product design! They only made 3351 914-6’s in 3 years! Only 1788 made it to the US. The 914-6 was a misunderstood stepchild in the beginning much like the Dino. Today they both are respected for what they are and what they have earned. When the 914 was introduced in 1969 by Huschke von Hanstein in the press release, he told the press, DO NOT call the new “Volks Porsche” “VoPo”! Of course the press being the press, VoPo stuck!
