I seem to be getting this a lot on most of my computers, anyone knows what
    this is??
I don't think it is a virus but what the hell is it? I keep deleting it
when I see it but it seems to come back??? I did a search on "tildy virus"
on the web but I uncover nothing....

Here a "PICTURE" of it (not the actual file):

RIGHT click thumbnail/icon, look at the PROPERTIES as it will tell you where that icon's TARGET is. The TARGET is the program/file that it goes with. THAT is probably what you want to eliminate.

Good programs to use, besides the usual anti-virus stuff, is AdAware. It is free and can find "spy/spamware".

    Hope this helps.

I use Skybot (free web download) to search out garbage like this. I also do a cleanup about once a week from DOS. There are temporary trees that stay on your hard drive, even though you have deleted from temp internet files, etc.

Go to the DOS prompt and type in:

deltree (hit the space bar) tempor ~1 Chose YES. You system may run an hour plus in deleting a lot of garbage well deep in your system.

    Start/Run then type msconfig

It will open a box, click the "start-up" tab. Look at what starts with your PC. You probably have 20 things starting with your PC that will run in the background and take up space. This icon is one of them. Most of the crap is pretty obvious (like realplayer, msoffice, etc.) but not all. If you're sure it's crap, un-check the box by the file name.

    Restart your PC.

RealPlayer is the worst. Even after you turn it off, when you open realplayer again, it puts itself back into your registry! I'm sure some smart lawyer could initiate a class-action lawsuit over this. Yes, I just wrote that, that's how much it pisses me off. Doing **** on my PC without asking is infuriating.

Fanatic - Tim..Its the Tildi key with the ~, should be top left of your keyboard above the tab key. Shut down the computer to the DOS mode and type the commands there.

i cant get into just DOS. there is no "restart comp. in ms dos mode" on windos XP. and pressing F8 during startup doesnt take me to a screen where ican choose startupmodes, like in previos wersions of windows. Why does microsoft not let me be in charge of my own comp.
Before i spend alot of time trying to delete this files, will i even free up a significant amount of harddrive space? Will my computer run noticably faster? These are the reasons why i'm even trying inthe 1st place.

    Might be (in) Outlook Express.
Here's how I made that determination:

Start>Search>For Files or Folders>Search for files or folders named:"~" - Make sure you put quote marks around the ~

After ~ came up with the exact same icon that you have, I pressed the icon.
In folder: C\Program Files: Outlook Express

Clicked on link to Outlook Express provided,

Noted it's the first file, and looked at it through wordpad. Gobbledygook.
    _____

Do you have an Outlook Express Icon on your desktop? If you don't, that's likely what it is.

I have a folder called "Crap" I put useless Icons and Downloaded Installers (Then install from the "Crap" Folder) into. If a program was installed by disk, I move Icons into the crap folder after installation.

    Simply Right-Click on your desktop:
    New>Folder>(Rename it):
    Then move the useless eyesores.
Clears the desktop, making it all sparkly and you oh, so desirable to minimalist geek chix.
