We usually go once sometimes twice per year to Vegas. So its not a big deal to end up not going. My brothers are there. I don't gamble either. I go for the food and other entertainment.

Fish and Chips was very busy. Forgot Thursday they have a seniors night. Luckily Dominos is right next door and wasn't busy.

Thanks man. I try. Everything came together pretty nicely. I went a little heavy on the garlic and mustard in the mustard sauce but it was still tasty.

Not sure if I've said this before but the nutrabullet or magic bullet, is probably my most used tool in the kitchen. It came with a bunch of accessories that make things that much easier. Including a nice little mug for smoothies.

Try pickling red onions if you haven't already too. I usually do them if I remember for my fish tacos...adds a nice flavor.

Love those JJ veggie sammies. It's probably my favorite chain restaurant.

It's odd. Amongst our friends, few like to cook. Couple of folks we know through the PCA. Former colleague who is retired. That's it. Most of our foodie friends go out for their fix. Or, come over to our place! Can't say I blame them though. Throw in a couple of kids, and there's not enough time to cook unless someone really enjoys cooking...T

I love pickled red onions! I was in San Diego on biz a week ago and they took me out to a Mexican restaurant (sure, let's take the dude from Texas out to a Mexican restaurant, can't get that there! 😀). It was largely meh, but they had these spicy pickled red opinions that were awesome. I think the heat came from crushed red pepper or some such.

This is a great and very easy recipe that I use.

Also, use it for carrots. May need to try it on turnips.

A quick Google search for Lebanese pickled turnips turned up several recipes. Mostly simple pickling with garlic and some beet for color. Here are a couple:

    Pickled Turnips - David Lebovitz

Pink Pickled Turnips | Bon Appétit

Let us know how they turn out!

Thanks. I saw the Bon Appétit one, but not the one by Lebovitz. Interesting concept of using the beet and it's coloring of the turnip as almost an indicator of doneness. The chemistry major in melikes that!

I have some shopping to do. 😃

Little sis grabbed everything needed for the holiday dinner. Her response to my comment about the wheel of cheese was, "But, it was the last one!". Gotta love it.

Luckily the fish and chips was busy last night. Gives me a dinner option for tonight. We'll do a fairly big family dinner Sunday. Have a big turkey. Hoping for lots of leftovers because I like doing turkey enchiladas.

Wife volunteered me for lamb. My house is in a state of chaos due to repairs, but I just don't want to cook a leg of lamb on anything other than my charcoal rotisserie. Eek! I'm gonna have to crawl through the construction zone and find my rotisserie equipment. The painters and the flooring people are gonna love that!

Davide - tell me about manchego. Embarassingly, I have never had it, but have heard of it. What other cheeses does it taste like?

For those celebrating the holiday, Happy Easter y'all from Texas!

Hi Tom. When he had DB Bistro at the Wynn it was one of our favorites. great spot overlooking the outdoor video programs, reasonable prices. We have been once to his new spot in Venetian...despite cautions from friends and a couple of locals we know. Very pricey, service was by a bunch of kids who didn't seem to care, food was good. The reviews on his new spot are generally negative and two people we know who are very much clued into the casino dining scene there tell us big changes in on-site management are about to occur. We are heading out April 12.

Oye. I feel for you but it will be worth it.

Manchego is a good cheese. Semi hard and mild I guess I'd say. I'm not sure you can compare it to be honest. If anything very similar to fioré di Sardinia. I'm not sure I've met anyone that hasn't thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Happy Easter to you too!

    Happy Easter!!!

Buying a ton of chocolates to hide for my nephew. I'm also eating some. Those Cadbury mini eggs are awesome! Its too bad you can't get real Cadbury chocolates in the U.S.

The sort of girlfriend and dinner date is a semi devout Catholic. No red meats on Fridays, etc. Tonight she doesn't even want to be at a place serving red meat! Good thing I've already decided fish and chips.

I like Manchego but I'd say Davide is right that it's hard to compare it to anything else. Has a slightly nutty flavor to me but also almost bland. It's subtle but that's one of the things I like about it. Makes me want to grab some Serrano and a good bottle of wine to go with it. That, some olives and a baguette and I'm set. :)

I hit Costco today but was rushed so didn't get much. Trip tip, some Ahi, and a turkey sammich and salad for dinner tonight. Ever have one of those days where you just seem to hit every red light and get behind the slowest possible drivers? ALL DAY LONG!?!?

Oh and a tres leche cheesecake for dinner Sunday. I'm doing ham and others are doing all the other fixin's. Should be good.

Almost got some manchego at Kroger while I was picking up supplies to pickle turnips. But, the young lady behind the counter didn't fill me with confidence when I was asking her about it. So, I'll hold off until I get a chance to go to Central Market, my usual source for cheese that doesn't come wrapped individually in plastic. 😃

I'm all in on the pickled turnips!

I did a mix up of the two recipes that El Wayne provided. Now, we play the waiting game!

I didn't look at the recipe but how long does it take to finish? I might actually like that. Let us know how it goes and how you like 'em.

I made grilled cheese with the Manchego and some bull**** trader joes truffle olive oil tonight. (I have no idea what this olive oil goes for at trader joes but do yourself a favor and don't even bother.) Nutty in a cheese description works for this though. Admittedly I have the most difficult time finding descriptive words for food/drink.

As for your traffic incident, don't even get me started. I had to go 60 blocks in Queens yesterday morning because I mis read an address when I punched it into the nav. I honestly think traffic control was toying with me. Every three blocks the light went red.

^Jdubbya...A week was what I read in the recipes. Maybe a tad longer though. One wanted the mix to be stored in a cool place. But, I ain't doing that. They're chilling in the fridge. I'll report in a week or so. I'll give the container a shake now and them to keep the brine in full contact with the turnip slices...T

Dinner was good.... Ordered too much stuff.

Pickling has me thinking about a friend of mine since grade one. His mother made dill pickles, homemade was awesome. I'm still friends with the family, should visit them and see if I can get her recipe.

Do it. Home made pickles blow away anything you can buy at the supermarket. I can't stand most mass produced pickled veggies - usually too sweet. Making them is really not much work, mostly waiting. So, I like to make them and see how little sugar I can get away with in my brine. Ditto for jams and jellies…T

Yep. Its been a few years since I last visited them. I'll eat it but not a fan of canned fish. I like homemade canned. Or I'll buy those frozen tuna steaks at Costco to make tuna salad.

Oh yeah. Ain't nothing better than tuna salad from fresh grilled tuna steaks. A little olive oil. Minimal mayo. A few herbs and spices, and as much good wasabi as you can stand. Put that on good bread, squirt of sriracha. Yum!

Got some manchego at Central Market. They had aged for 3 months, 6 months and a year. The younger stuff seemed softer. I went with 12 month. Nutty taste. Like it. Reminds me of a milder pecorino. Going great with wine...T
