Looks great! We go through a lot of cumin in this house, not only with all of the Mexican and Middle Eastern food we like to make, but we also do a lot of Sichuan cooking with cumin, Sichuan peppercorn, and dried chiles.
Thank you. I use an old coffee (blade) grinder to grind spices, and then pass through a sieve to get rid of large bits. However, I'm all for the liberal use of dried, pre-packaged spices when time/energy is limited, like after a long day at work. However, nutmeg is one of those spices that really profits from fresh grating. In my case, I don't use it much outside of the Xmas season, and the occasional addition when I'm making Turkish coffee, so I can be a purist! T
My SIL buys a lot of weird spices for Chinese dishes and also buys weird mushrooms, etc. Stuff you can only get at Asian markets. Not sure what the movie will be, but going with my brother tonight. Decided we'll make the entire prime rib roast.
We're predominantly a Chinese household, so we have an entire pantry dedicated to Chinese spices, fungi, roots, berries, chiles, etc. Every time I open that pantry door, I'm hit with an aromatic blast of star anise, clove, ginseng, various fungi, funky roots, and who-knows-what-else. In fact, if I would just take the time to investigate, I'm certain I'd find the wife keeps whole nutmeg in there somewhere.
My SIL is Chinese, born and raised in mainland China. She only knows how to make Chinese dishes. I forget the region is from. In fact she doesn't like North American or European food at all. She goes to Richmond and Vancouver's Chinatown weekly to shop. She doesn't drive so sometimes I've taken her. Have no idea what she buys, all kinds of weird stuff. Some of it is good, one or two things no way will I try them, like 1K year old eggs!
I don't think I'd eat those thousand year eggs on a dare. I have Filipino in-laws and balut (fertilized duck eggs) is scary stuff...T
The wife and kids refer to these as "hundred year eggs" and eat them chopped up in their rice porridge. I've tried them, don't care for them (the taste is salty with a hint of Windex), and while they're probably not as disgusting as you might imagine, I'm perfectly alright with never eating them ever again. Won't go anywhere near these!
Day 5 on the pickled turnips. They're a lot more purple than before. I've been shaking the container every AM to make sure the pickles are all equally exposed to the brine. Tried one this morning. It seems OK, kind of like a dill pickle without the dill, I'd that makes sense. More tart than sweet, but I used less sugar than the recipes suggested. I like the texture. They're still quite firm. Good snap to them. Toothsome? I gotta get to a Lebanese restaurant & taste the real McCoy, as I have no telling idea what they should taste like! 😀 T
That looks great. I'm trying to eat less and I feel like I've managed to eat more. It's so odd how that works. Tonight was a perfectly cooked skirt streak with fries and grilled zucchini. Does anyone know if red meat is really that* bad for you?
Must be pizza day on F-chat. I did the Wolfgang Puck smoked salmon pizza. Sans caviar. http://www.wolfgangpuck.com/recipes/appetizers/Pizza-with-Smoked-Salmon-and-Caviar If you've not seen it, the Sauces & Dressings that Puck shares the recipes for on the above URL are fabulous. T
The veggies are actually left over from a different meal the other day. We make grilled veggie wraps somewhat frequently. I wanted to use them up before they went bad. Bought a store bought crust, brushed it with basil infused olive oil, added mozzarella and goat cheese along with the veggies and some balsamic drizzled on top. We will be making this one again!
I just woke up after a HEAVY lunch. Walmart thin crust pepperoni and sausage pizza (better than one would expect), 1lb of hamburger plus 1lb of sweet Italian sausage with a half a bag of finely shredded Mozzarella....delizioso!!!!
Yessir I did it and have no regrets... Lol! I thought you realized by now that I am a kitchen 'idiot savant'?
So I guess we're doing the lifetime clock through this thread?! 2# of meat on a pizza... You're certainly making me feel a bit better. I think I need a nap though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Pansy. I wouldn't eat one again, but my ex is Filipino and her family served me one. They (as all Filipinos in my experience) are overly generous and hospitable with food. Eat till you're about to die, then they make a to go plate for you that requires two men and a dolly to lift. But it's so good, pansit and adobo and lumpia and longganisa and karekare and my favorite lechon kewali. Why the **** isn't Filipino food more popular in the US? I mean there's a ton of pinoys in every Asian restaurant kitchen.
In my youth, I had a "hollow leg" as my grandma used to say, and could eat almost literally ad nauseam. Never gained a pound either. Today, not so much! 😉 What was that tv show were this dude used to do food challenges like eat five pound hamburgers and ten thousand chicken wins in an hour? Gregg's pizza could be a candidate for that show! 😃 T
LOL. Good question. The only Filipino food I've ever had is Jolibee! I don't know how authentic it is, but man, I love those peach mango fruit pies! 😃 T

I live in a Navy town so there is a large Filipino community here. Sort of a legacy from the old days of sailors stopping off in the Philippines when we had bases there and then marrying Filipinas and bringing them home or getting stationed here and staying. Several good restaruants although I will admit I will never eat a balut. Before he passed used to have a friend who ended up being our office admin assistant who would bring them in occasionally. No thanks, I couldn't even stand to be near the smell. He loved them though!! As for the generous part, holy crap yes!! Every office feed we'd have there would be pans of lumpia and pancit and chicken adobo. Good stuff for sure and eat for days!!
