What's good for GM is good for America. I was always skeptical of that assertion, but maybe it is true that what is bad for GM is bad for America. Schuman Carriage was the main GM dealer in Honolulu for about 100 years. The main showroom with the horse drawn carriage and the full size wooden horse was a local landmark. The TV ads were a fixture on local television. Daily, the cars were lined up at the service intake area and the showroom was full of cars, salesmen and, most importantly, customers. Mid-day would see some of the mechanics walking to various places in the neighborhood to get some lunch or do some banking. Occasionally, one or more would stop by and we would compare notes on cars and the good and bad of working for a big company or working on one's own. A lot of paychecks were generated and a lot of families were raised because of the activities there.

The Schuman family sold the business to another major local dealership about five years ago. This other dealership was able to keep things going for about another four years until they shut everything down and the site was put up for sale. It almost seemed inevitable when, during the last run up of gas prices, the lot was packed with Escalades and Hummers. The site will be a Safeway store.

Sad to see it go, I went with a few buddys after our return from Desert Storm to pick up their new rides there. It is a loss in many ways.

Any idea what's going up in place of the dealership? Demolition ain't free, so presumably, someone has sumpin' in mind.

That's ironic, I'm here in Oahu for vacation and JN Rental gave me a 2008 Chevy Uplander with 15k miles and it rode like crap. All week I was so mad at this vehicle because it drives like an AstroVan with 200k miles. All week I kept telling my passengers that I would NEVER buy a GM or Chrysler product, it is just total crap.

    Hi Glassman

Another superlative might also apply. I was walking past the site with a friend of mine who is an architect. He said, "That is one ugly building". It is hard to disagree.

It was some years ago, but I do remember being surprised when I was told that the store that is being replaced was the highest grossing Safeway in the country.
