For those of you who enjoy this period in motorsports history, you might pick up Toly's Ghost by Burt Levy. It's one of a larger series (The Last Open Road, Fabulous Trashwagon, etc.), and I'd recommend it just as something to remind us all of those days.

    For got to mention earlier...

Also, The Limit, which is more about Phil Hill than von Trips, but it's emphasis is on the '61 season.

Nice to know I'm not alone in feeling that the vintage thread has been dumbed down by newbies who know the price of everything and the value of not much at all (with apologies to whoever said that first).

I was curious too about the quote. Looked it up and found it was Oscar Wilde:

"Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Was also used by Joni Mitchell, though can't recall the song.

I poked around online and found that the quote of the this thread's title was by Jack Brabham. Now, I wonder who came up with "back when the drivers were fat and the tires were skinny . . ."

Someone on a Lotus site believes that quote comes from Froilán González. Fits the circumstances, but I can't verify it.

We had moved to Milan two months prior to the 1961 Monza event.

Through some connections, my Dad was able to get pit passes for the race.

We were fortunate to have met and chatted with Wolfgang Von Trips and Phill Hill, both of course with Ferrari.
We also met Dan Gurney (Porsche), Stirling Moss (Cooper-Maserati) and Graham Hill (BRM I think).

In later years, whenever Phil Hill happened to be in Manhatten, he and Dad would meet for dinner or a drink. They were both true gentlemen.

Not sure if it was original at the time, but I do remember it was used in a Road & Track P.S.
with José Froilán González looking down at an F1 Dunlop...

Surprisingly enough, the old gent is still with us as far as I know.

Well it's now about 3 hours later and I've watched all the original postings several times on a big screen, and offer in return the suggestion to look at "Trio at the Top" a brilliant New Zealand documentary on Bruce McLaren (how many of the modern purchasers even remember the man or realise what that cute logo represents - hard as it is for an Aussie to admit!), Denny Hulme and Chris Amon (reputed to be one of the few drivers Enzo actually liked).
Makes you think about your life - my highlights:
    - having seen Fangio drive a Silver Arrow (even if it was demonstraion laps)
    - having seen John Surtees 'demonstrate' both his F1 car and GP bike at Goodwood
    - witnessed Senna vs Prost at Suzuka
    - witnessed Ferrari win at Monza (Alonso, not an Italian or I'd have died of excitement!)
    - driven some of the same tracks as Brabham (Sufer's, Lakeside)
    - driven, tracked, motorkhana'd and even dragged my own Ferrari! (No small feat for a girl from the 'wrong side' of the track)
    and regrets...
    - that when I was working on the Hamilton (NZ) casino (near where Chris Amon was dairy farming), I couldn't convince the clients that the Sports Bar should be F1 themed - they all thought Rugby Union was more important!
To the OP - thanks for cheering up my Saturday night - far from home, friends, and cars...
