Ok, all my years in Hawaii pre-dated my Ferrari ownership, so I have to ask: can anyone recommend a good independent shop (on Oahu)? If I recall correctly, the JN auto group is the official factory authorized service venue (for Lotus and Lamborghini too?), but... I'm not as well heeled as many Ferrari owners, so I try to save where I can by doing what I can on my own, but as soon as something goes beyond my limited ability, I would like to know where to go. It seems that, depending on the work required of course, that official dealerships can run almost double what reputable independents typically cost.

As I mentioned in a different thread, I'm going through the mental dilemma of whether I should ship a 348 out to the islands or not. Finding a good independent is a HUGE factor in that decision. If anyone has someone they would suggest, please do so. I've noticed that in other regions, there seems to be a few shops that everyone speaks very highly of, such as Norwood's in DFW area, or Eugene's in SoCal, etc., so anything remotely similar in the islands?

    Thanks for any comments!

I know on Maui there is one in Lahaina but I think you would need to go to Ferrari of Hawaii (JN Auto) When I move to Oahu I will let you know.

Does anyone know of a decent mechanical repair shop on the Big Island?
If I had to transport a car by barge, or hopefully the Super Ferry someday, I would probably bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.

There are a couple of places on the Big Island I recommend. In Hilo it's Bob Bertini, also known as "Car Dr. Bob" and "The Big Island Car Doctor." His garage is in the Shipman industrial area. Bob used to own a 308 and is familiar with the 3x8s. He even makes house calls! This weekend he and I (I'll be the helper/undestudy) will change the water pump, timing belts, and tensioner bearings on my 328. Bob is cutting back on his work hours and no longer advertizes, so you'd need to call him to see if he wants to take on more work. PM me if you want his phone number.

In Kealakekua (Kona side) there's Mike Getzinger's European Auto Specialists. They are more oriented towards German cars, and with the local VW dealer failing they've picked up the warranty load for VW North America, but there's a veteran tech there named Ben who knows his way around Italian cars. Last time I was there (having my wife's Jetta diesel worked on) they had a 308 in the shop doing a major service and then some on it. They've done some major work on a friend's Alfa GTV 6, and he's happy with them. PM me if you want their phone number and/or email address.

Those two guy's with the corvette shop in the old industrial area seem ok. They always have some interesting vintage cars in for service. There is also a guy just accross the street from them that has a Ferrari Service sign on the door. I havent talked to him though. Might be one of the people that you mentioned. Last summer I saw a couple of Diablo's up towards the Hilton. I wonder where they have work done?

Thank you for the leads, gentlemen.

I guess there are Italian car mechanics silently lurking in many a common dealership.

Well... it's been a while and I thought I would re-visit this thread. I still flirt with the idea of moving back to the islands, but still have 2nd thoughts about shipping an F-car out. Has anyone had a major done in the past 6 months, and if so, where was it done and how satisfied/confident are you with the shop? Comments for all islands please!

The only authorized Ferrari dealer in Hawaii is Ferrari of Hawaii on Oahu. Their lead Ferrari technician, Aron Inouye, is fantastic. He's one of 11 Ferrari Master Technicians in North America (as of last year) and really knows his stuff. Call Tina Flatt, one of their service writers, and she can interact with Aron regarding any specific questions you may have. Tina's direct line is (808) 585-6614. The dealership's Ferrari customer satisfaction index has always been very high. Good luck!
