have w211/e55 amg which is renntech tuned (~560 hp/610 tq). would love to have a f-car after having owned a number of basic good cars (m5, 993 carrera etc.). which one would provide the best performance/comfort/relaibility for the $...is there a best year?

    550 or 575M
    456gt/gta

    Whats your price range? 355 dips down to 75k, 456 about 60k, 575 and 360 about 150k.

prob up to ~$150k at this point. the modded 55 prob runs 11.6-11.8 & ~121 trap @ 1/4, but as we know this is a totally diff car versus the f-cars. straight line monster and good handling, but not a f-car. colleague just picked up a P-car TT today near ferrari dealer and all i could do is look at the f-cars (they are beauties). any thoughts on best price/perform/comfort and relaible, much appreciated. likely a stable mate for e55. young w/ new family so f430/599 etc is more diff to justify (at least at this juncture now). is there a best yr per se for any recommend? thank you again.

I finally saw a blustery PM challenge you sent in July to another presumed 599 owner.
Doubt you or your friend'll hand me anything. A Renntech SL65 of a friend tried, as did a Supra of a friend. Try again. LOL.
    C&D got a 1/4mi time of 11.2 @ 131. [email protected]. MT got 11.3@129.
    AM&S got 0-186.6 at 29.9s.
    Quattroroute got [email protected].
Bring it baby. And not on public roads like the 997 TT's it has "run". Alex has a 599 and a 65, and he knows.
Funniest "threat" I've seen in years.

    360 for performance

    550/575 for comfort

    reliabilty the same.

360 is a sports car rear engine

    550/575 a GT front engine

You can get F1 in either.

Usually the later years have fewer bugs.

I think the 360 is better looking. the 550/575 a more traditional Ferrari look.

    don't like the 456.

    Where do you live?

I had to laugh at that one. I'm not sure how anyone in a 5,000 lb pig can expect to beat a 599. On paper the 599 simply runs away from any mercedes of any description, except perhaps the SLR 722. I love my 65 and it is wicked fast but it takes soooo much much time just to get that thing rolling. The 599 is way down the road by the time the 65 is finally moving. Weight is the enemy, especially when it comes to standing starts.
I understand that those who have never been in a 599 cannot fathom the performance of this magnificent vehicle, or the engineering dynamics that make it so agile. They believe it is a heavy V12 akin to the 550, but the quantum leap in performance can only be experienced in the car.

Coming from a hotted up Mercedes sedan, I think you'd want to go with something with decent comfort and luggage capacity, so the 550 is probably the best fit. (If you need a back seat, a 456 GT -- manual -- is something of a bargain now, due to the Ferrari '2+2 depreciation curse'.)

If you de-emphasize comfort and practicality, the 360 Modena is becoming more of a bargain and would keep you happy on the track.

The 355 is a pretty car, but the maintenance/repair costs would send me over to the 360 (quicker and likely more reliable) or 328 (slower, more reliable, pretty but outdated in performance stats) camps, depending on your performance versus aesthetics/nostalgia values. I ended up removing the 355 from my list and going back to the 328, but the car is only for weekend drives and shows, so 0-60 isn't as important to me as it may be to you.

Funny about the Porsche 996 TT -- I had a 993, and it was looking at then current 996s that convinced me to go the Ferrari route.

brother-in-laws. 55 is renntech stage 5, and yes, little girl, it will hand your car's arse to you. you infer too much from few too little words. unintelligent and uninformed-good combo.

How does running a slower time than two magazines tested the 599 at equate to "easily walking"?

I also like the year later trash talking.

Douch3bag. It is DRIVEL. Check your pants, something's missing. Maybe it's at Renntech. Try caps on sentences too.
    Thread's dead, man, Thread's dead.
We'll all be glad to help you select a car though. Moron.

Well, you're correct on some levels, but the E55 is only a couple hundred lbs off of the 599's weight. The 65s weigh much more and are turbocharged (possibly contributing to some lag).

Another issue is the gearing. The 65 uses a five-speed tranny and has a low redline. I believe peak power is made at 5200 RPM which is insanely low. The 599 has much, much better gearing, allowing it to jump ahead quite easily.

I certainly believe the 599 defies physics. It is amazing what that car can produce. Despite its weight, I'm almost inclined to think of it as a sports car :)
