I have started researching the TR as a future purchase (hopefully not too far in the future...)
I've found lots of great info on here, but I was just wondering how many of you do most of your own maintenance on the TR?
Is there any routine maintenance that is too difficult for your average at-home-mechanic to do?

    Thanks,
    John

There is nothing so hard that an average Mech cannot do IMO.
Especially if you take note from FC.com

I too do most of my own maintenance other than major service. A good service manual, a computer for searching on Fchat, and a good set of tools is all you need. The nice thing about these cars (and other F-Cars from the 80's) is that they are pretty straight forward to work on... nothing really beyond basic metric nuts and bolts.

$20K-$30K in tools, another $15K, or so in diagnostic/test gear, a bottle of asperin, a big box of band aides and a,lot of patience is all you really need to do any job on a TR or BB....(Of course, experience helps, but that can be developed over time.)

And yes to your question: I do all of my own service, including majors, engine and tranaxles overhauls...BB's, TR's, 308's, 328's, 246's, etc...

I find these cars immenselyrewarding to work on...and enjoy.

    Best,
    David

I do nearly everything myself. If it's something I don't know about, I 'm not afraid to ask.

Testarossa owners are in general a pretty helpful bunch, especially this mob!

    What does "Fcar putzing" mean?

I can guess, but I thought that I would ask for the exact meaning.
I like the word 'putzing', it seems to say everything while saying nothing at all!

I do everything myself, one of the reasons I bought an F-car, keeps me busy and makes owning a Ferrari "cheap"...

    Dear Ferraristi,

I love working on my 91 Testarossa and my 97.5 Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster. I just love the castings and mechanical sculpture to caress my hands over. I'm guilty of spending more time cleaning the underside than the exterior.

I wish I had the skills like some of my fellow TR owners though. I can do quite a few things except for the biggies....timing belts, valve adj, dialing cams, water pump.

For me working on the cars are fun and relaxing. I don't like working on everything. My F250 goes straight to the Ford dealer....no fun working on that vehicle. :D

With the various levels of technical expertise on the TR board, there's enough help to progress deeper and deeper into the car....very rewarding.

I had NO experience with cars/tools/mechanical stuff growing up in NYC. I didn't own a wrench until I was 30. I work as a physician to pay the bills and I work on my 512TR to relax. I did the engine out 30K major myself at home (now 41K miles and no leaks - not a drop), and I just finished a complete dash out interior and AC restoration (with an assist from Shamile). If I can do it, anybody can do it. Just take your time, ask questions, write things down and take lots of photos. You will find this forum invaluable. Enjoy the ride.

Great feedback everyone...that is what I was hoping to hear! Sounds like the only way of making the car somewhat affordable is by trying to do most of the work yourself.
Are there any places that sell OEM parts at discounted prices similar to what www.pelicanparts.com and www.bavauto.com do for BMW??

    Dear Ferraristi,

This is really not just making the car more affordable to own. We are all enthusiasts here and enjoy working on them. I think I speak for most here when I say that.

If it was about cost, the parts cost alone will make you cringe.

For parts, the usual suspects.....Ricambi, TRutlands, Eurospares....and if you have a good relationship with your Fpimp (dealer) they may give you a discount like I receive.

Good luck with your purchase !

....oh, and welcome to the board.

    Thanks,
I am planning to do most of the work not only to save money but also as an enthusiast (I have a BMW which I have done a rolling restoration on, and a Delorean that I bought a few months ago that I have been working on...guess I am stuck in the '80s).
I am certainly not looking forward to some of the costs involved but I do know that it is a part of owning one of these great cars!

Altho I'm not a 12 cyc. guy(have worked on them) I prefer the V8 cars. I have done 95% of the work on my cars(355CH due for an engine out this winter). It is part of the mystic of owning these cars, the guys that don't do anything on their cars are missing the point of owning this stuff.

I do, I have a fairly kitted-out garage. But I paid for the major on my TR cause I had never seen one before. I went to the garage everyday and watched the process.
