On the live Robb Report webcast the other night at the end the question was asked if you had $100K, 500K, 1M what are the cars to buy. This no an uncommon question and the response alomost never includes the 330. Usually the list for the 100K includes the 365 GTC4, the 250 GTE, or the 365 GT 2+2 all of which have, in my opinion, far inferior lines to that of the 330GT 2+2. How anyone could think that the lines of either the GTC4 or the Queen mother are graceful or attractive is beyond me. The 250 GTE are the best of the 3, but not exciting.
    What do you think?

I picked up the Robb Report last week on a plane flight. It had some cover about Vintage Ferrari investing or some such thing.

Once reading the article, I started to cringe. On the "BUY" list.........

Tell me where and when those cars are available for sale. I think to put a list together of the absolute top tier Ferrari's with a "BUY" list is silly. Very rarely do these cars change hands and when they do, they are almost always by private treaty or auction. You aren't simply going to wander into your favorite classic car dealer and decide to move forward with the buying decision because of a magazine article like that.

That being said, my first ride in a Ferrari was a 330 2+2, it was something I will never forget. I still love that car. These cars are greatly under-rated and even the most common ones are still pretty darn rare, especially if they still survive today.

The 365 2+2 seems a little goofy in person and the 365gtc4 is much better in person but looks dated. Regardless, I would rather have either of these than some silly Muscle Car that is sadly worth twice as much money or more.

Well mate, seeing as how you have no identifying information on yourself anywhere,I can,t see you getting much of an answer.
Are you a Ferrari afficionado? or a ringin from somewhere else.
What country you are from may get differing answers to your question.
In Aussie all 330s are held in high regard by the front engine mob but in the USA it seems both the 330 2+2s and all the 400 series are held in low regard.
Hence the chopping up of perfectly good cars to build questionable replicas of Testa Rossas' and GTOs.
I,m guessing you,re from the 'states since you,re quoting dollars.

Maybe I could start a thread on having certain criteria prior to joining Fchat or any other forum for that matter.
Security is one thing but bloody-mindedness is another. If nothing else at least sighn your name at the bottom....unless you like being called 'mate'.
You will find non of that rubbish in Aussie Section........you,ll find bucket loads of other crap but at least you know who you,re swearing at.

In my view the 330 GT 2+2 isn’t as unloved as many would be led to believe by journalists. Recent auction results have been strong. I am aware of a few buyers who are picking up cars as they become available. The issue is as it always has been that these cars cost the same to maintain and restore as some much more "valuable" models so the 330 2+2's are not an "easy" car to own (from a $ perspective)

As an owner of 2 V12 F's I am someone who appreciates the engineering and drivability of the model. At the end of the day these cars were built by Enzo so in my book they are a piece of history and I feel privileged to own one

Personally, I think the GTC/4 and the 365GT both look better than the 330GT. But that's just my opinion, and is based on nothing more than styling.

I find the 330GT to be a bit ungainly-- the 4 headlight version particularly so.

Well, a blatant invitation for opinions, so...

To me, the 330GT always looked heavy and bulbous especially the rear half; the live rear axle was anachronistic; and the quad-headlight version was a styling error plain and simple.

But it's better looking than a GTC/4 or Queen Mother, and if you want a vintage Ferrari driving experience complete with interesting materials, finish, design values, then the sixties were sure more fun than the seventies, so net net I share your bewilderment.

If by "loved" you mean "price" then I'd venture to say that prices for these 2+2 cars are driven more by the value of their contemporary 2-seat counterparts then anything else. All are great cars, but (for example) 250GTE appears to be priced relative to the value of it's engine and parts, which it alone shares with many insanely valuable Ferraris. Looks alone dont determine price in this case.

    What he said.

The other factor is that the two seaters of the era are so legendary that any of the 2+2 cars is going to look frumpy in comparison. The 330 GTC has aged beautifully, for example.

My Series 330 2+2 was an absolute blast and provided the Vintage 12 ownership experience for four years. Far from being unloved, it was widely admired locally.

I'm glad that I bought it when I did, in late 2002. Right now, I'd expect an asking of $100k for a Series I of similar condition to mine before it was totaled.

Had I $100k to spend now and was going for a Vintage 12, I'd be looking at C/4s. $100K would buy a decent driver; add $25K more for acquistion costs, major upfront needs, and extended sorting out of more minor ones.

Excepting very needy cars, $100k looks to be the price of admission for the Vintage 12 market.

I've often wondered why it's unloved as well. When I was making the decision on a vintage car, the 330 GT S2 was an easy decision. To my eyes, it had better styling than the other cars mentioned (though I do love the front end of the 365GT 2+2). It also had the perfect ingredients for what I was looking for -- considerably more power than the 250 and much lighter weight than the 365's. There are some definite advantages to the 365's, but they felt more like a modern car to me when I was really looking for vintage feel, so the 330's seemed to offer the most (the most modern "vintage feel" car).

I'm certain I'm alone in this, but I actually prefer the looks of a 330 GT over the GTC. I know the GTC's are considerably more nimble to drive, but they look a bit chopped off to my eye and I actually find the 330 GT more balanced visually. The lack of universal appeal of the 330 GT is a gift to those who appreciate them because it keeps the cost of entry somewhat affordable.

I personally know of a gent in Denver who absolutely loves the 330 GTs. At one point, he had three in his garage: Two were his, and one belonged to a fellow member of FCA. He loved his 330 so much that he put considerable time in at the shop of our favorite local Ferrari mechanic, learning how to re-build it to excellent specs.

Seriously, this is the first I've heard of 330 GT's being "unloved."

Roger that. But I will throw in a vote for the Queen's looks as well, though I am biased.

on topic, I have done many miles in a friend's 2-headlight 330GT. Sweet, sweet car, beautiful handling, nicely balanced, and actually feels small. I just don't get the"unloved by the market" thing; it makes the owners the geniuses of the Ferrari world.

I never understood the large price difference between the GTC and the GT, when the GT is the better looker and more closely connected to the heritage in chassis form.

A l-o-n-g time ago, in another place, far, far, away, I asked the King of the Toasted Ponies this same question. I mean, is a transaxle really worth all that much?

He looked at me and said, "You fool. Everybody knows the price goes up when the top drops down over two seats. Secondly, even if the drop doesn't drop, two is better than four."

For the record, I ended up buying #9881. I sold it three years later, and it paid for my foolishness with a 550 Maranello.

Was the car great? YOU BETCHA!

I think most people disagree with you John, which is why the difference exists.

Personally I find the GTC endlessly better looking. But that is of course only a matter of taste or lack thereof. The big difference is in the way they drive. The GT doesn't hold a candle IMHO. Sorry.

What does that phrase mean? How does having the chassis and IRS of the 275GTB make the GTC more remotely connected with heritage than the GT?
