It's 400, Ferrari themselves say so in their book! ;)

Spacer It gives us great pleasure to introduce 'The Official Ferrari Opus'. This exclusive publication is available as an edition of just 400 copies, in homage to the founder and the number of Enzos built. All copies will be signed by the surviving Ferrari World Championship-winning drivers. Reflecting its significance, this is a very substantial publication indeed: 852 pages, 37 kg in weight (including binder), plus 2,000 photographs and images.

The Official Ferrari Opus' brings you the true magic of Ferrari from the world's greatest circuits as well as glimpses behind the scenes at the work of the Maranello technicians and even inside the cockpits of the cars themselves.

Artists also make limited editions. And they are tempted, when someone wants to buy a print and says "Can you number that No. 1?" when they have sold no. 1 of the limited edition long before. Because there is always the chance that person will attempt to re-sell the art work and then the real owner of No. 1 will say "How does yours have the same number as mine?

I think if Ferrari went to the trouble on a car to etch into metal where the car is in a limited edition they are bound by law to only make that many of the series, whether it's 100, 400 etc. They start to look greedy if it can be documented that they passed the "promised" amount because some were buying it partly because it was a limited edition. We will have to see what they do with the Aperta. They said they would make 80. But when that high roller from Dubai bellies up to the car with cash in hand after they sold 80, let's see if they crank out no. 81...of coruse there is always the dubious "continuation cars" such as Shelby tried with 427 Cobras(selling between 5 and 10 at a reported $500,000 each) or Broadley did with the Lola T70s or that owner of Aston Martin who commissioned three more Zagato DB4GTZs or Rolls Royce who did backflips when the Sultan of Brunei's brother ordered a Silver Could III dhc. Ferrari might try that angle but only after a proper amount of time has elapsed, in the case of the above four non-Ferraris decades had elapsed, a decent interval to make it clear these were not part of the original run ( a distinction which may be minimized when they come up for auction at Monterey or Scottsdale...)
