I know of a few people who have temporarily imported their cars via the first link that I posted, and there is no possible way they would have passed normal US standards. As long as the car is not staying permanently, I believe you can drive pretty much whatever you want, as long as it was registered somewhere else first (ie, your home country). Just don't let it stay past a year, because if they find you/your car, it might be confiscated and it won't be allowed to stay in the country, even as an off-raod/track car only. I know of two people in Texas who lost their cars because they were here on the one year temporary import and kept them past the time allowed. |

Thank you Sean. Now to figure out if they can be driven on public roads... Kds, The reason they are not street legal is not that they are RHD. They simply don't comply with other laws. Cheers |

As a foreign national, you may bring in your personal vehicle for up to 1 year, as long as it is registered in your home country. You don't have to do anything otherwise to make it legal in the US. It's true, you cannot sell it, and if you leave the country, the car must go with you. I have looked into this before since my fiancee is a foreign citizen and I am considering bringing a car over as her being the owner. Upon further search, here's a link that gives more info: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/TempInfo.html I think this link refers to permanent importation: http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/import/infrequent_importer_info/personal_vehicle.xml |

Taek... Here in Canada RHD cars can be operated and licensed on our roads as temporary/tourist use or full time vehicles..... Just a comment regarding differences in laws FWIW.

Mark, I am pretty well versed in making Euro cars street legal. The concern is more along the lines of having the cars in the US temporarily and then returning them to their respective homes. I also know how to handle the shipping. Its the paperwork that has me baffled. I ran into those threads as well in my search. They seem to deal more with conversions and title issues. Cheers |

Amir, I have a history with the guy. I just added the comment there to show that I have actually made an effort before asking. As for "that's his job" comment. He is a sales broker. As a previous customer and as a customer who has referred a large amount of other customers to him I expect the common courtesy of answering my questions. I know for a fact he lied to me because he said "I don't know" to something I had already asked him and I had gotten an answer from. I just happen to have forgotten the answer...but that's another story. The thread is not about the broker. Cheers |

You're not paying your broker and expecting him to help you with something he does for a living? And how is he being insolent if he says that he doesn't know something? Do you think he's lying? |

Hello all, Friend of mine and I want to bring some cars to the US for street use. Will only have the cars in the US for about a month. Anyone have experience with shipping and temporary paperwork? I have shipped cars back and forth from Asia, but never on a temporary basis. I have been told that there is some paperwork available that makes the car street legal for a short stint. Paperwork states the car will not be sold, etc. Two cars are RHD and not US road legal. Three of the others are not US road legal. Total of eight cars, with provisions for another three pending tentative decision from another friend. First eight cars would be coming from Asia, latter albeit tentative three would be coming from the Middle East; of which none are US street legal. Anyone? Thanks. My broker is not being very helpful claiming ignorance, although I suspect his insolence is more directly linked to the fact I'm not paying him. Cheers |
