Thanks Bob. Actually the car was not ready for pickup yesterday, so I'll try again today...of course they are calling for heavy rain!

Hey Brad, congrats on your car. Enjoy it! Noticed you have a WRX as well. I love these cars, and will probably get the new STi. Just waiting for a test drive.

Mark,
The carfax report will in likely be worthless to you. It will probably show the date/place where the emmission test(s) took place and possibly the owner titleling (sp?)the car.

Hi Bob,

The first owner of 59657 apparently hardly drove the car. Instead he used it as a display piece in his conpany showroom in Europe. Within a year of buying it, he shipped it to Fort Lauderdale in the USA where it was used for the same purpose - a display car that was hardly driven. For the car to comply with US emission rules it was fitted with a catalytic converter (and MPH speedometer) at that time.

The first owner ultimately shipped the car back to Europe - I believe to Munich, but I may be wrong about this. He sold the car after owning it for seven years and before it had even had its first service (7,200 miles on the clock).

From the time it spent in the USA, there is an ID plate in the door jam that highlights, inter alia, "MFD by", "Imported by", "Date of MFG", VIN and "Type". The date of manufacture indicated there is 1986...vague and apparently incorrect too.

I have tried to find my car on the US VIN tracking website http://www.carfax.com and it tells me that there are "2 records found in our database - The 2 records on this will confirm a clean history or uncover potential problems. Find out by ordering the complete report". Is it worthwhile to order these reports (i.e. will I learn anything more about thecar from the reports?)

Regasrds, MARK

Dan,

There was a grigio/red 328 at Norwoods in Dallas this past Tuesday. I didn't get any info on it, though.

Also a red/tan 328 with 150,000+ miles on it!

Jeremy,

Had the front of my car repainted for that very reason. 3M makes a product called trimline which is a plastic type film that can be applied to the front of vulnerable 328's. Your local Ferrari dealer should be able to hook you up with an installer in your area.

Does anyone else think their 328's paint around the front gets too easily chipped? Ok, maybe I spend too much time in the fast lane, but I avoid driving too close behind other vehicles. (it's great how a bright red Ferrari approaching at speed causes other drivers to move over). I must end up with a new chip every month! The grill in the hood is especially vulnerable. Any suggestions as how to best protect the paint? I hear there are plastic films that can be applied. Has anyone used these?

Mark, US cars have an ID plate in the back of driver's side door jam immediately below the chrome (rear) bonnet release. This plate shows the VIN and month/year of manufacture. The plate also certifies the car's compliance with all the safety and emission standards... so it's probably just a US thing. Euro cars may NOT have this plate... I believe we ran into a similar situation when we asked Peter Soderlund from Sweeden for his production date.

Your car was probably produced in October or November '85 based on the VIN's below... and Craig Dewey's production date.

Hi Bob,

I have no idea when the car was produced. How do I get hold of this information as I would really like to know myself? I have a fairly complete history of the car from delivery through the third owner (myself). The first owner was Mr. H.G. of Lyon, France who took delivery of the car from Charles Pozzi S.A. on November 21, 1985. Pozzi recently sent me documentation confirming this.

Here's a shot of 59657 & her current owner:

Other Interesting Notes:

*** Note BJ Rowe's car is a GTS Turbo - 208. No year was provided so I guessed. For pics and more info on his car (see the 328 style bumbers), go here:

From Dave328GTB, changes by VIN:
Here are some of the major updates according to parts manual:
Door design (inside handles moved, etc.) #71597. Further inside door changes plus horse on mirror (US cars) #75929.
valves # 71381
valve seats #76666
oil cooler #75272 (plus associated parts)
Major changes at 76626 (88.5 cars)include all suspension parts (forks, shocks, sway bars, etc.) brakes, steering rack and wheels which have more offset than before. BTW these wheels are not the same as Mondials in width and offset. Also the front bonnet was changed eliminating the hood bending button strut.
ABS does not give a beginning number.
The air box and inlet tube was changed 78069 which I believe coincides with 89 model year in US.
With ABS came another front bonnet and changes under it.
Front and rear shocks were changed again at #78613.
The seats and adjustment mechanisms were completely changed at sometime (no vin# given)
There are numerous other changes throughout production, but these are the biggies.

Nice Dale, keep up the good work then. I recently Tubi'd my car as well, love the sound, the stock exhaust was way to boomy and caused resonances and virbrations I didn't like.

Try the car on a long drive, it's great. I have driven my 328 three times from Seattle to Vancouver, and will do it again in two weeks.

David,
I got the car in Nov 02, documentation indicates that in April of 01 the car still only had 1960 miles, the previous owner that bought the car with 1960 miles had a dealership do extensive ($$$) service for belts, ALL gaskets/o-rings, etc. It does not even leak a drop of oil. I got it with just over 7000 miles and make it a point to drive it every week, maybe not long road trips but at least it is driven. It is also has a Tubi :-)

P.S. I've put 8k miles on my 328 in 9 months of driving! You've got that much in 14 years for crying out loud.

Tom, nothing fancy here... the 328 register is just for fun. I suppose it could be valuable to somebody in 25 years who's trying to search for history on a particular car. Rob may be a bit gray by then but I'm sure F-Chat will still be "THE SOURCE" for Tifosi. :-)

In a couple of days, I'll take all the new additions and update the list. It will be copied and pasted back into this thread where it will eventually fade away into the F-Chat archives. You'll be able to find it by searching "328's Only".

What you see is what you get... no hidden spreadsheets or anything like that. In 6 months, we'll once again copy & paste it into a new thread and update it once again.

It's actually kind of interesting to look at the info Dave provided at the bottom of this thread... updates to the 328 by VIN. Then compare those updates to the VINs compiled on the list.

Seats and most of the interior is brown...so go with brown. What's "brown" in Ferrariese?
(ross) "brawn"??

John, like yours, the build date on my '89 was also October '88.

[[[Although Peter's 1988 gtb is 79043...do you know why that is]]]... You're right, the VIN on Peter's '88 328 is actually later than our 89's. So we would assume it was built after our cars yet it's registered in Sweeden as a '88. Apparently in Europe (at least Sweeden), model years of cars are determined by the manufacturing date... unlike the US's early release of model years. As you know in the US, if a car is built in October, it's typically registered as the following calender year's model.

At least this was the only reasoning we could come up with... unless Ferrari's VIN system was completey wacko???

bob

build date was october 88 but original sticker says that the car is a 1989 model year....i think this is pretty typical of most cars. Although Peter's 1988 gtb is 79043...do you know why that is

no relative in dallas, but if i did, i would probably own more bmw's....

John, glad to see an '89 with an earlier VIN than mine! Was your build date Sept or Oct 88? You don't have an Uncle in Dallas, do you? :-)

Hey Bob,

Here is another Giallo-bellied car for the list:

1986 328 GTS Yellow with Brown/Black interior, serial #65277.

I know my old car is in Virginia - red/black '86 328GTS, euro model, ser #59899...

It's funny - I noticed that my old car was the second earliest 86 on your list, and my new car is the second latest 86 car by VIN #.
