355 X-ost exhaust option for 355 5.2

Hi all,
I have a 96 355 spider 5.2 which I bought few days ago. Apparently it had Tubi muffler ( probably an old version ) with factory cats and the rest.

I’m looking for unleash more sound of the car and enjoy the higher pitch. However I don’t really want to spend too much ( max budget is around $2500k) or modify the car a lot.

I saw on few posts x-ost was mentioned. Could you give me a rundown on the options, quality of the build and the price ( new or used )?

There are better versions of Tubi exhaust for the 355 that sound better than the very early ones. There are also Capristo exhaust that has a different pitch when bypassed. I actually prefer the Tubi muffler on my 355s.

Regardless of which version you choose, if the bypass valve does not open as designed, you will be missing that F1 sound, so make sure that works first. It is often a problem on older 355.

Last, I am pretty sure you won't find any used or new muffler for a 355 at the price you want to spend. One of the most often modification to a 355 is the exhaust note. That includes new headers (Tubi has the best headers), sports cats (Fabspeed or equivalent), and Tubi or Capristo muffler, with a open-on-demand bypass valve.

That is about $10K of parts alone.

X-OST is going to be difficult to find used or new. Up you budget about $500 and try a Tubi Evolution. Or perhaps a Mille Miglia exhaust.

 

If you are patient, used Tubi’s come up on here occasionally or on eBay. I think the Nouvalari mufflers might be in the $2500 range or it used to be if I remember correctly. I bought my Tubi from one for our members.

 

He’s already got a standard Tubi.

 

How much Tubi evolution versus the old/standard a Tubi sound is ?

No comparison. The Tubi evolution has a much more distinct sound change when the bypass opens due to its design.

 

Ken, just like the Capristo, finding out which Tubi you have isn’t obvious. There were a few variations of the std Tubi. I tried comparing some of the numbers on my muffler with what was on Eurospares website and didn’t come up with a definitive answer.

What’s the easiest way to check they open correctly ?

Well, if you are sure that your exhaust should be really loud when bypassed, then the easiest way is to cruise at 50 in 2nd gear and smash the throttle. The exhaust noise should go nuts like in a go-fast movie.

In this case, since you do not really know how your exhaust works (it's why you are here asking ...) then the validation is much more involved:

1. Apply 15psi vacuum to the valve stem and see if the valve opens.
2. Check vacuum tightness of the lines between the bypass valve and the vacuum switch.
3. Check to see if the electro-switch is open correctly when 0V is applied to the input.
4. Check to see if ECU is even puttin out the correct control signal at the Ecu connector.

Sometimes the 5.2 Ecu is smart enough to figure out if the bypass valve is working or not, and throw a CEL if not. (1448 or 1449, I think).

 

I wouldn't do that in 2. Gear .. in case your valve isn't working correct (stay closed) and you hit full trottle, you'll accelerate to fast and the exhaust pressure in 2.gear will be to fast to high, befor you even hear if the valve opens. This wouldn't be healthy for the engine.

I would do it in 4. Gear. You will have more control about the rpms. Hold the Rpm under 2800 and then hit full trottle. The car will not accelerate fast, but the ecu will open the valve . If the sound doesn't change until max. 3000 rpm something isn't right.

 

That sounds a bit silly, exhaust pressure at redline is bad if you don't have a bypass. Don't hit redline and fuel cut off unless a car has a bypass? Always upshift and never go to redline? Hell my RA Spec C had 92-00 red line and it saw it in second gear daily, even on the highway. Pretty sure racing engines are designed to be wrung out, it's not a 1975 Civic. I could be wrong but I'll say this, Mitchell has pulled more engine's, trouble shot more 355's and driven more different 355's, and knows more about the 355 than most Indy shops.

So is the valve mechanism not part of muffler box ?is there a way to keep the valve always open? Any downside of that for this engine ?

hi eric. i don't know mitchell or hes reputation on the 355.
sure, you can check the bypass at full trottle in 2. gear...of course can you do that, but why should you, if it's possible as well in 4. gear and less risky to overshoot?

you really comparing an RA Spec C with an 355? are the RA Spec C known for cracked manifolds or damaged valves (engine valves) due an not working bypass valve ?
In fact of those problems i changed my oem bypass valve to an capristo bypass valve, just right after the purchase of my car 2013 and i didn't had any problems with exhaust valves or broken manifolds.

redline? hell yeah, if everything working properly.

i hope bennzwel figure out if hes bypass is working properly ...as he like, in 2. or 4. gear

 

in the early days, before the bypass remote control, they took an tie wire to hold the bypass valve open. Good idea, for checking the sound level with open bypass when you drive... so you can compare to now.

Ahh mine was Ver8 had headers, exhaust and Tial BOV. As far as valves, mine bent when a shop forget to tighten down the bely keeps around the pully and it skipped a tooth idle, beyond that it was rock solid and it was a tarmac rally set up on the street that did not live the pampered life of a 355. Not sure about the overshoot... on a own shift yes, over rev is very possible.... but spooling up? There is fuel for sure on 355 and probably ignition cut off, my RA had both.

Few guys out here race them still to this day, I suspect they experience foot mashed to redline in second frequently. Maybe theirs are working properly.

 

Some say it does trigger a message, some say it doesn't. You can wire the valve open or reroute the vacuum hoses.

e.g. join 11 to 35 instead of attaching the hoses to the solenoid (i.e. with OEM solenoid and bypass valve).

Not sure about harmful effects. I did have a Lotus which used a vacuum controlled exhaust restriction valve which helped heat up the cat faster, but the F355 has a secondary air system to help with that.

 

Hey there! I had an 83 Civic that I wrung out on just about every shift and that thing ran for 200k mi before I got rid of it.

 

Ohh and 355s have the worse exhaust manifolds they crack often

An astronomical amount of threads on that, and the cracked manifolds (that all fail ) results in often weird symptoms that cause tail chasing.
