To those who have some experience in it, what say you about the best way to sell one of these cars? I am tentatively kicking around ending my Ferrari experience but I do not want to deal with a stream un-productive tire kickers/phone calls. What seems to work best? This is not yet a firm decision but much of the time lately I feel that perhaps I have scratched the Ferrari itch and, after 5 years of ownership would like to pass my 328 on to someone else. FWIW, my wife would rather I did NOT sell it...
I sold mine through the dealer resto shop that I bought it from and it worked out well. If you have the time I would say the best way to go would be to post an ad here and try to sell it to another Fchatter.
Ebay works fine. You have to have detailed photos/description of history to get best price. No way around or escaping phone calls/emails if you are a seller. No one hands over thousands of dollars without some degree of assurances or details from a seller - it goes along with the process.
Fchat or such can work, of course, but a different way to go is thru a dealer who's a specialist in Ferraris. Pick the right one and you have people working for you that can find good leads, represent the car fairly, and help out both seller & buyer. The commission is negotiable but often is made up for in getting the most for the seller. The trick here is to find a GOOD dealer, one with the knowledge to do what needs to be done- fairly and honestly- and will leave everyone feeling good about the deal, when one is made. Markets are constantly changing, either up or down, and so experience is the key. Besides honesty, of course. Cheers, Rich
Old saying, here, which might apply- "marry in haste, repent at leisure". I'm referring to selling the car, nothing else. Cheers, Rich
Well, I'm not to the point of deciding to actually sell yet but to answer the question: 1989 31,000 miles and change (I'm not at the car so I don't know the exact mileage but in the 31's) Red/Tan
On eBay, here are what to prepare for: 1. Lots of pictures, imagine this: have your car in the center of a semi-sphere and camera pointing toward the center. Circle the camera around and take a picture on every 30 degrees change. Do this for 2 feet height and 4 feet. In addition, take pictures of interiors, this time camera in the center pointing outward. If there is any blemish you want to zoom in on those. 2. Get a CraigsList e-mail address; you can do this by posting something. You can avoid people bothering you after the sale. 3. Gather all documents on the car, history and maintenance. 4. Be ready to answer e-mail promptly; make sure your phone alert you when e-mails arrive. Reply to inquiries, at least a promise to respond, must be sent. Having done that, buyers will be plenty. You want to talk to series buyers on a private channel; phone, real e-mail or online chat. Unfortunately, at this stage there still are tire-kickers. You want to filter out those and discard them. I recommend one mindset: treat your car as your daughter and you are looking at son-in-law candidates. I do not have experience with other methods. Hope this is useful.
I didn't read the rest of the thread but anyways, after 11.5 years of ownership I sold my 328 (to an Fchatter) thru this site. Sale pending in less than a week but it took 3-4 weeks to complete the deal (bec of ppi, dealer far from where I live, minor repairs, my schedule, etc). I initially thought of putting it on consignment or just trading it in but I am glad I didn't. I didn't want to lose 10% of the car's purchase price. Below was my ad. Disclosed everything. Don't be vague, like I don't understand when sellers say, "last major 3000 miles ago" which doesn't mean anything to an educated buyer. Good luck. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/ferraris/444438-1989-ferrari-328gts-red-tan.html
I am in the market for a Red/Tan 328 and would love to buy directly from someone. I have the wife's O.K. too. Actually selling her 73 Super Beetle to make room in the garage for a 328. My turn to have a toy. I would love to buy directly from someone here. I just missed one that was listed for $46K but a dealer bought it and he is now asking around $60K for it. It pisses me off when they pick these cars up at fair prices and then mark them up. If you decide to sell or anyone knows someone selling please hook us up. Thanks...
Good luck! I have had allot of weirdos from would you drive my son to HS one day, I just wanted to drive it, all the way down to "I just wanted to see it". Not to mention all the emails and phone calls. I know we live in a remote area but I had no problem driving 500 miles to purchase it. I would rather keep her but my health dictates that she goes. Lost PS only two solid prospects in a year but wanted me to drop the price, not!
I consigned mine to the shop that maintained it. Never advertised; took five months to find a buyer who knew a really good car when he saw it and was willing to negotiate for a fair price. Well worth the wait. In between, many tire-kickers and hot-deal seekers came and went.
Based on my abortive attempt to sell the 328 years ago, I would recommend consigning it. I advertised it locally by myself and all I got were tire tickers who wanted to play with the car, or jerks who expected a perfect car for salvage prices.
Well, maybe not that long...there is one '89 328 GTS with 6110 miles on E-Bay UK (OK, OK, RHD...) This morning with an asking price (I know, I know: she'll probably trade lower but nevertheless!) Of 115.000 GBP, which is roughly 175.000 american dollars. So wait a few months and you should be able to trade it for a second-hand 458 Italia. How 'bout that? Rgds
