I have a 90’ 348 and I can hear grinding from right rear when making a slow left turn. I think it may be the wheel bearing. Can someone point me to a previous post or video. I’ve looked but not finding much. I’d like to try it myself, but I’m not the most patient so I need some guidance. There is a write up on My348.com which I will refer to but hoping to find a post with pictures or a video. Thanks Vince Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
After I owned my care for a few years his showed up. It was the secondary transmission shaft. It was not noticable to anyone except me. May not be a wheel bearing
Thanks. I’m thinking about checking the brake pads and rotor as well. Someone told me they had a warped rotor or hung up caliper or something. I can’t remember, just that it was brake related Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
I had a groaning sound on the 90 348 I owned. Turned out to be the rear wheel bearing (as I suspected). I let a very experienced indie do the work (one who has maintained Ferrari Challenge race cars for many years). He said it was one of the most difficult jobs he's done on a Ferrari. Hopefully mine was an exception and yours will be easy.
I agree, but that sounds expensive. I’ve put over $20k in maint and repairs this year so I’m looking at options if In fact it is the bearing. Maybe it’s just a warped brake rotor. Also, this is an early 348 and I thought I read replacing the bearings are not as difficult as later 348’s. Any idea on the cost of a hub? I thought I saw a post somewhere of around $2k. If this is what you need, Ricambi has new ones for $1,600. each. https://www.ricambiamerica.com/157900-hub-r.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
Anyone know if pulling the hub and trying to replace the bearings are an option? Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
But here is what I paid during the car's 30k service. Notice, just the bearings. Disregard the 105 and 840 totals since other work was done as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Wade. If it turns out to be the bearing I’ll compare the work it takes to remove the hub and replace with the one from Ricambi to what it takes to pull the bearing out of the hub and replace. If replacing the whole hub assembly is a lot less trouble I’ll go that route. Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
The Tech said that the ring nut was a bear to remove. Him and two others spent hours on it. Good thing he didn't charge me for each and every one of them. Oh, and I hate to add, but consider doing both sides as the original parts are equal (quality, age, usage, etc.).
Yeah I watched a guy on YouTube remove his from an 87’ Mondial. Looks like work. Lol. Will be checking it out today. Hope it’s something like a warped rotor rather than bearing. Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
In some later 348 and all 355, the bearings are not replaceable. You have to replace the whole hub. Why does the "ring nut" have to be messed with?
Yes it is an option. I have replaced both rear wheel bearings on my 348, which is a ‘90 as well. It’s easiest to get the bearing/s out with the hub completely off. Once you have the old bearing out take it to a good bearing supplier and have them match it up. You’ll need a ring nut socket to get the inner flange (where the cv joint attaches) off the outer flange (where the rotor & wheel mount).
Ernie, is this something that a novice can do( I’ve done my own Brake’s, some bushings, plugs, the easy stuff...)? Also,I just lifted the car and have just the slightest play when rocking tire at 6 and 12 o’clock. Wheel spins and heat no grinding. [emoji848] Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
If it was that one it’s about 100 times easier to replace. Being that it’s a 90 model in pretty sure it is not the sealed bearing type and is unfortunately to old school pressed in bearing type. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Yeah, missed the "90" in the OP's first post so this item probably shouldn't be mentioned at all. And "replacing the whole hub" threw me off...
Yes!!!! You can do it! Post #231 here, https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/348-engine-out-major.438576/page-10, I remove the CV joint/half shaft from the flange. Starting on post #571 here, https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/348-engine-out-major.438576/page-23, I show how I remove the hub from the suspension. Just take your time, and take plenty of pictures. You CAN Do It !!!

Is this something I need to fix immediately? I put maybe 50-60 miles a week on my car - and what all do I have to remove to replace it? Vince FerrariChat.com mobile app
You need to replace the boot immediately. If you don't water / dirt will get into the grease and destroy the CV joint. Plus, as you drive you will sling grease all over the place.
