Ken, a) The way Ferrari did it was to simply color in the 'clear' plastic numbers and symbols from the REAR of the overlay ... i.e. the sticky side. Peel back the 3M paper backing and color the numbers/icons using the sharpie pen. Sounds pretty crude but it works well. If you skip this stage, the numbers and icons look yellow and don't match with the rest of the console. The problem is that the green color used on the plastic was not dense enough, and using the sharpie makes it more 'emerald green' and fits the rest of the console. b) I finished all the interior using a Rustoleum black sheen. It takes a long time to get all the crud off. If you look back in this thread, you'll find a bunch of information on how to get rid of the sticky bits. Regards, Pete
Sorry, Last question: 1) Should I put something between the overlay and the lights as you did on the preliminary version or is the final dark enough to go without it? Thanks, ken
Ken, Even with the double silkscreened process, I was positive I could see the hint of a bright spot. I just took a black sharpie this time and puts dots over where the bulbs are .... takes a couple of seconds . I just didn't want to stick the thing down and find I needed to do it anyway. That 3M glue is pretty strong. When the AC console is put back 'scalped', turn the lights on and you can see each bulb very clearly. A dozen or so dots over each one .... or even just take the sharpie and color the bulb areas completely will work. I noticed that the sharpie trick just gives a transparent 'black' over the bulb .. not dense, so you still get all the light you need for the decals etc. Regards, Pete
did we all get the same part? it looks great. i dont have an issue with this part on my car yet i got one just in case. thank you very nice, good job.
Yep ... they were all the same. I admit I didn't look at each one ... I just stuck them in the envelopes. Regards, Pete
Who was it that ordered about 20? I know someone in FL who needs one also and I want to hook the two people up.
Evening .... Dave Helms bought the remainder of the 50 that were not sold ... but he hasn't got them yet. Recall we sent 20 back because of poor workmanship. Dave said he would take any that were not sold, so if you want one, I can still send you a couple ... when they arrive ... which should be any day now. They're $39 each ... plain old check or Paypal @ [email protected] My address .. 17733 White Oak Hill, Cypress, TX 77429 Regards, Pete
It took me about two hours. Could have been less. But here's what I started with... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Then I removed the cover and used plain old soap, fingernail, putty knife, and steel wool to clean up the old rubberized coating on the knobs. I was surprised that I didn't need to re-paint them... Then I finished it up and re-installed, using tips described herein for "T.O.-ing" the numbers with a Sharpie (tongue-in-cheek 49er reference there). I'm pleased with the results and it is a high quality item (thanks Peter!). The only thing I'd try to find a way to change is the lack of "rounding down" within the knob-wells. That is, maybe there is a heat or pressure process that we can come up with to get the edges of the cover to conform with the rounded edges of the console at teh knob-holes. All in all, as Peter said - just look at what I started with! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Pete - a guy by the name of Bernie will be ordering one from you. FYI - Got 1st place at concours FCA last Sunday...judges never noticed the A/C was changed / altered...
You know I looked at that (trying to get the rounded bits). I even tried to cut the pieces off the old piece ... like an annulus type ring thing and stick it one the Lexon bit. But mine was so trashed (the original piece) I decided I was wasting my time. If we went with some type of process to get the rounded bits it may be pretty complex ... and therefore costly for small orders. But, if the original piece is in not bad shape, maybe cutting the rounded bits off and sticking them on the new plastic bit would work. Maybe someone would like to try and post the results. In any event I'm glad you're pleased... and it does look good doesn't it!!
Remember guys/ladies .. if you don't need to do cosmetics on the knobs, you don't have to part the top/bottom sections of the center console to fit the plastic refit bit. There are some very delicate bulbs in there that can break ... bad news! Regards, Pete
You're right Pete, I nearly broke one of those bulbs...also you need a tiny snap ring removal tool if you want to pull the knobs... No need to do that, everything can be done from the top side
Evening, Please take a look at Page 8 of this thread .. it's post number 160. Pictures and everything. Latest is that I'll have the remaining pieces on the 23rd of November. Why does it takle so long ... I have not one clue. In any event they'll be in the post on the 25th. Regards, Pete
Never could count proper! I saw the car up for sale ... you leaving the crowd or moving to something with better build quality .... a Padmini (hand built car from India)? Pete
Dave Car Guy, Any way you could post a pic of the end product installed in the dash? I already bought the piece (thanks for the step by step), and want to suggest it to a few other guys in the NYC group, but am not sure what it'll look like installed in the car. Minor details, but its sometimes hard to convince others. Thanks! David P.S. I didn't install the part only because I bought the piece for the future - mine isn't bubbling yet.
Pete - I want to get a 355 Challenge for a track car and a 05 Lambo. We'll see about selling this car...just might keep her.... Won't decide until after Cavaillino in January. I'm just putting the "feelers out". The service manager at Shelton told me "this is a real keeper"....he may be right. Plus I think I'm emotionally attached to her....gees, I better talk to a shrink
An 05 Lambo .. boy I must be at the complete bottom of the food chain! All I've got to look at is my '96 Spider and an '04 Enzo. There's a question for anyone with an Enzo ... over the last months I've found it diffciult to get into mine ... does anyone have the same problem? Maybe it's the scale .... 1 : 25 .... Pete
