Steve, where/how is the bracket bolted on? Did you have to drill holes? Thanks

Did my 308 just like Steve King's, but I drilled through the fiberglass dam for all 4 holes and bolted the plate flush with the spoiler, so the plate was angled flush, not vertical up and down. Looked great and was readable from the front. If I still owned the POS I would have taken a picture.

The idea behind front plates is so a vehicle approaching a witness can have its plates identified too. Say a vehicle involved in a child snatch/kidnap has license plate 123 SAM and is described as a late model white Toyota. Patrol officers who come across oncoming white Toyota's will be able (during daylight hours) to determine whether or not that particular Toyota is a suspect vehicle. Also aids in identifying vehicles that are backed into parking spaces.

State laws vary, but if I caught you with a false, phony or altered plate in Cailf. you lost your car and went to jail. Just that simple.

Thanks again to the cool people who posted.
It was interesting to see how this problem varies by state.

Sorry that you had to wade through the BS (from one clown in particular) from people who apparently live online here and do thousands of posts, calling people "N" and "F" along the way, just to "win".

I may email some of you and thank you individually for your input. But overall, now that I have this $1,000 issue put to rest in my mind, I've got other things to focus on (like finish my novel, THE EDGE OF HEAVEN by the 8th of May so it can go to the publishers for type setting on the 15th).
    ============================================
    THE NEWS
My good friends at Ferrari Denver are now sending me a set of factory-supplied front plate brackets (which the service manager says he's never seen installed on a 550). The federal law is that manufacturers must suppy these kits and they're usually in the trunk. Apparently, the 550 kit suspends the front plate over the front grill (which is hideous to me and obstructs air flow, so it's no wonder they're not installed). I'll just return it to Denver if I don't like it.

My local body shop is sure they can fabricate something next week that wont be too bad-- but I'm pretty sure it wont be 12 inches from the ground to the bottom of the plate. So what? I'll just tell any cop who stops me that it meets all parts of the statute. And if he doubts it, I'll challenge HIM to produce a 12inch ruler.

The WYDOT says there is no exemption to the Wyoming law and whoever presented the "exemption letter" to the WHP officer who stopped me yesterday probably had a forgery (or it was a kinder and gentler era in WYDOT and they were writing such letters without true authorization).

Tomorrow, I'm scheduled to speak to a WHP administration guy in Cheyenne to get the enforcement skinny. He'll probably advise me to buckle up, "It's the law!" His boss was my best friend in high school.
    Later! John

Don't do it! The mesh weave in a speedline bra was enough to give my Maranello fits and cause the plenum hose to break. Very expensive.

You can either do my paper plate idea, or we need someone to fashion a cool carbon fiber plate holder that fits on the side. (Are you listening Ryan?)

ps Congrats on the book. I have just started a small publishing company to publish books on Ferraris. Man, this is starting to look like work! :)

2 screws drilled into the lower spoiler. Mount an aluiminum bracket and mount the plate on 2 uper bolts. Put a frame around the plate and there you go. NYSP says it's OK although the law wants the plate to be veritical (this is the laser target) so it can be read by the redlight radar and laser. 1st ticket is dismissed if you show proof you corrected the problem. I think 2nd ticket is $100 and I don't know about the 3rd but I bet it gets better. Enjoy the ride

In the few times I've been pulled over by the Police, they've never confronted me about the lack of a front license plate on my RX8. I'm really not sure if its against Nevada law though. Pretty stupid ticket if you ask me...

I'm in Michigan, and there is no two-plate law at all. I thought there were only a few states with a two-plate law, obviously I was wrong. Anyone know what other states only require one plate? If Michigan's the only one, I sure lucked out. Won't have to warry about messing up my Ferraris when I start to buy them.:)

In 2000, these were the one-plate states: AL, AZ, AR, DE, FL, GA, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MS, NM, NC, OK, PA, SC, TN, WV.

If you are in another state, pick one of the above, and move there!

For those of you visiting San Francisco w/o front plates, just make sure to not park on the street. The meter maids hand out $100 tickets to vehicles without front plates. I've gotten one, and I know several friends who have received several.

My friends dad was a cop, now an investigator. My friend asked him about it a while back and said that there were a few cars that Texas allows or do not make big deals about not having front licence plates. BMW and Ferrari were two that I rememeber him mentioning.

That is the opposite of my personal experience. I received a ticket last year for no front plate on my 360 and was pulled over for that reason alone. I conducted a fair amount of research and contacted some JD friends (including the Dallas County Judge) to discuss my options. You may not fabricate a copy of the license plate nor can you velcro one onto the bumper. When you try to get the ticket cleared, an officer must physically inspect your vehicle and check to make sure the plate is SECURELY fastened to the bumper. Even though I walked with the officer to the front door of the police department and pointed out the plate was on the car (it was parked in the first spot by the door), he had to inspect the plate to ensure it's authenticity and that it was securely fastened.

Holy schiest.... I thought downtown Sacramento was bad when I got my no front plate fix-it ticket in their public parking. $100 shake down??? That's law enforcement???

Sacramento has a few new electronic toys for parking contol... if that's what you want to call it. As the little tin can car trolls up and down the streets, a digital camera snap shots all the cars plates and in seconds runs the plates through the 'grid'. The only ONE benifit this thing has is the ability to spot a stolen car. Other than that, it will help the city impose many fines if the plates come back as, parked too long, expired time down to the second, which cars need to be towed asap, which cars need the tire boot, etc. IF they happen to spot you with no front plate, fix-it ticket is automatic. All that to reach long and hard into your wallet.

Need I dare say what's coming down the pike at this rate?... mandatory GPS installed on every car for the purpose of imposing fines on everything we've discussed and THEN SOME??? Insurance companies would love to buy into this. You think it's bad now? all those intersections you don't come to a complete stop to... FINED, 1/100000th over the speed limit.... FINED. Turning on a known double line street... FINED. You want to talk about an enhanced Vehicle Code enforecement? When will it stop?

Ricers are a red flag to the "bulls".

My 328 was my daily driver for several years, and I never got pulled over in it (other than "security inspections" at the local USAF base gate).
Within the first year, I was pulled over three times in the EVO -- once at 20 in a 25 zone, for "looking too fast". But no tickets, once they saw the gray hair.

A mechanic once opined that the cops figure that older drivers are "more responsible".

Me, I think the cops are afraid that a Ferrari owner will show up in court with the firm of Dewey, Cheetham, and Howe. ;)

The sterotypical "ricer crowd" are easier marks: lots of really bad advice for handling tickets on the ricer sites, and a generation raised on "you can't fight city hall" and "just pay the `road tax'".
But you never know when grumpy old men (who remember when it was "we the people" instead of "we the cattle") will fight "on general principles".
Cops don't like showing up to traffic court, either.

I also disagree with this based on my experience.
I have four cars of various flavors without front plates, some have been that way for for over 15 years. The Ferrari is the only one that has gotten stopped, repeatedly, for a missing front plate. Never even mentioned for the other cars, even when stopped for other reasons.

Here in NJ, there is only one way around the front license plate requirement. That is to register the car as an historic vehicle. The only problem with that is, the car has to be more than 25 years old, and you can't use it as an everyday driver (supposedly only for shows and club events, but I've never been stopped and asked where I'm going). I've registered my old Jaguar XKEs as historics, and for them, I only need one plate in the back. No plate needed in the front (look at my avatar -- no front plate). Unfortunately, the Ferrari is not quite 25 years old yet. Even though I have it registered as a "collector car", I still have to have both front and back plates on it.

Of course, there is the alternative -- move to a state that only requires one plate. I think Pennsylvania still only requires a rear plate. Florida is a one plate state also, isn't it? So them's the options, or just put up with the nonsense and pay the tickets.

I'm not sayin my info is correct. Its just what his father told him. His father and a few of his buddies may have been ones to turn a blind eye. I think it's a ridiculous law anyhow.

Doubt that would work William as the cop would certainly point out sarcastically that "you can afford it"!

Another idea might be to point out that the car is built of special materials and drilling the holes for a US plate would weaken the structure causing a possible accident - so that's why you have a special bracket on order at many $$$$ so you can be seen to be a good citizen.

    Hmmmmm

Actually its already available and reads your activities using your toll tag (if you have one) - which may become the way of licensing future congested area access like London and Singapore have already done.
