Basically, I'm attempting to reinvent the automobile. For too long this industry has been enslaved by the boundaries of convention. By compromising with century old technologies, automakers have sacrificed the simplicity that once made cars affordable. Performance does not require expensive complicated assemblies that require constaint maintenance. It requires true engineering, and true innovation. This car will be lighter, stronger, safer; with fewer parts than any other automobile and performance that pushes the human body to its limit. Oh, and it's also cheaper to produce. Something like that-
Michiel nice website and very interesting portfolio, and I love your 3wheeler!, I've been working on something similar but with a scooter engine....then Piaggio came out with the new MP3, so now it's almost dead... Ciao Italo
Hey, so the GTO may become a reality? Cool! Congratulations! I love that design, especially in black with the red stripe across the hood. Thor
Heres to the dreamers. However, there is no conspiracy to keep cars "low tech" and exspensive. The automobile is kept in a tightly mandated box by the laws of this country and the world. If you think your car can be filled with crash structures, convienence features, airbags, sensors, ecu's, etc.. and still be simple then i wish you luck. The fact is that cars are faster, safer, cleaner, and more reliable every year. So please define the technologies and breakthroughs that you have come up with to revolutionize the state of the art. Cheers Eric
I haven't really been following this thread, just jumped in to see some of the later results.... i REALLY like that side profile!!!! The 3/4 doesn't do so much but the side profile is like WOW! to me.
I really like the drawing in post 1031, very Ferrari. For me, the car in post 1035 looks nice, but too much Saleen, not enough Ferrari.
Ouch! I didn't even realize that the Saleen had a "look", but I think I know what you mean. Think of it as being the spiritual descendant of the Dino Berlinetta Speciale, the more radical precursor to the 206/246 Dinos. Like the Berlinetta Speciale, it could serve as the inspiration for the definitive design - maybe. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's nice to see someonelse doodling at lunch. I'm sure that if you worked it over the CAD image it would look shorter...but not bad, maybe a little smoother at the front, but it has potential.
The other Dino designer at Pininfarina was Paolo Martin, and these are some of his original sketches...and his other creations -Modulo, Camargue, Sigma and many others as you can all see. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nice project. I thought this looked a bit like some of the sketches so I thought I would post it and give you some ideas... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sketch A is the best. I found this sketch on www.designerspace.com It may be a bit too angular, but I like the way this guy used the chrome bumpers. I invited him to join this project. I hope he will. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Do not ever take my comments as an insult, your concepts are great, and I see what you were trying to achieve. Take a look at the silhouette of a Saleen, and you will understand my comment. The Saleen is a nice looking vehicle, just not really Ferrari looking. Comments from the peanut gallery: Post 1042 looks like a Photoshop of the Saturn version of the Pontiac Solstice. Post 1043, I like the roof line on drawing "A". Post 1044, Michiel, chrome bumpers? As long as they quickly removeable!
I'd like to start with a short personal rant... I think the project as currently being developed, is too wide. Earlier I posted the dimensions of the original 246GT as compared to the Lotus Elise.(as part of this post I'll add a photo of the Europa S that MM has already mentioned). I consider this to be very close to the ideal size (if rather ugly) for a new Dino; perhaps with 2 or 3in. extra WB to allow for a V6 rather than the 4 cyl. Imagine this car with 1.5 in. less ground clearance. I really don't see the point(yes I understand the reasoning) in building another car the same size as the F360/430. What made the 246 fun to own was that it was useful almost everwhere in europe. There are a lot of narrow lanes. As an eample, I think width was the single greatest reason for the failure of the previous Fiat Multipla in Italy; everyone has at least ONE relative that lives at the end of a narrow track. The current proposal would have added a 15 min. walk to my old house in Massa Lubrensse. I also think it's causing some of the design difficulties here; changing the width/wheelbase relationship so drastically makes recapturing the "Dino" feel tough. Agree/disagree? rant over; to move on fuorieserie,-where are you finding all of the historic drawings that you've posted? are they from a book? personal collection? I really enjoy seeing them and, looking at the last one, it's not difficult to imagine where the inspiration came from for some of your earlier drawings. MM,-I've thought for awhile that your recent efforts felt a bit stubby. Part of this is no doubt as a result of laying it over the 430, but when I went to your new web page(v. nice by the way) and saw your image "dino 15" it finally hit me. The image overlays your new Dino on the original. The slightly "cab-forward" greenhouse makes some difference, but I found that by editing out the two lower scoops between the wheels, the result felt lomger, lower, and much closer to the original in feeling. I'll leave it to you to try it or not. also, who was the designer of the last drawing you posted? I really like the way he handled the air intake on the side. It references the original but doesn't copy it; very nice. The front, however, reminds me a bit too much of the Pantera and the roof is pure Zagato. cheers to all Image Unavailable, Please Login
Like I said earlier the F430 based Dino was just a small sidestep on request and I just wanted to give it a try, just for personal reasons, but not as I had intended this thread. Please forget about the F430 and continue with the chassis Velocityengineer has provided. See his portfolio here: http://www.designerspace.com/pages/3-designerspace/design/a/11612/p/1/ntdd/0/m/1/portfolios.html
Hi all, I've tried to give it a go myself. The idea behind my drawing is as follows. I've assumed that the underbody aerodynamics are far more important than a wedge shaped design so I've tried to echo the sloping design of the original Dino, especially at the rear. Further the headlight design has advanced considerably and these lights are getting smaller and smaller. This would fit perfectly with the neat front fenders. I'm not sure yet about the front design. I'm going to do a frontal and a rear view too to see how it works out. When sketching I noticed that I like a more agressive design which doesn't really fit the road Dino. I'm thinking more along the lines of the 206 SP dino rather than the 246 GT Dino. I like sports racers! Maybe I'm going to do a SP design too. This would allow me to do the same sort of canopy as the P4/5, see last sketch. Keep up the good work guys, it's really inspiring! Hello, firstly I would like to thanks of Michiel invitation and to excuse me for communication problems, because my English is very bad... sorry... I saw the 54 topic pages; and I was really surprised with the amount and quality of proposals for new Dino. The desire to see some of those proposals to materialize is really very big; and I would like to congratulate all the participants, for me it was a class of great learning. . . . Trying to help in some way; I would like to inform that in another forum a contest is happening with the same theme: Ferrari Dino: http://speedanddesign.net/v-web/bulletin/mx/index.php?page=2
Please, no offense taken - I was just kidding with the Saleen comment. After all, that car was designed primarily to win races. Like I mentioned, I understand what you mean, the proportions are a bit (lot?) extreme for the new Dino concept. Nevertheless, I think the forms can be adapted to the shorter/taller profile. Nice greenhouse on the 3/4 view - the rooflines on the side views peak too far aft, though. I've tried something similar to yours at the front, but I think a pointier nose/fender (in profile) looks cleaner.
